Come on, you know you love these threads. ;)

Car and Driver released the results of their '08 Lightning Lap. Boyyyy were some of the results surprising!

Whole story:

The Lightning Lap, 2008 - Feature/Features/Classic Cars/High Performance/Hot Lists/Reviews/Car and Driver - Car And Driver

Results (PDF file):

Not only did the Cobalt SS T/C absolutely spank the Mugen Si, it was also faster than the Evolution MR, 135i, Lexus IS F, Honda S2000 CR, Lotus Elise SC, Infiniti G37 coupe, and Subaru Impreza WRX STI.

Interesting note. Per Car and Driver they lapped the Mugen Si 1.7 seconds quicker than they did the '06 Honda Civic Si coupe. Looks like it does improve the car, but what you get for nearly $10,000 should be a lot more than 1.7 seconds IMO. It was also almost 12 seconds slower than the Cobalt.

The interior may suck, but this car cannot be denied the fact that it hauls some serious ass. That time is incredible.

I thought the Cobalt SS was fast, but what the heck, beating the Evo MR, WRSX STI, 135i (lol overpriced BMW)?

Mugen Si being slow isn't surprising. I bet almost all of the 1.7 sec improvement is from the suspension. Too much fluff for the Mugen. Would've been better with turbo or S/C, and not all the superfluous ground effects.

Because they technically still in the same class: sports compacts.

I agree its a bit uneven of a competition, but it's still legit. If you want the most power for the money...Cobalt SS/TC is the only way to go.

Probably no better or worse than the Si, depending on how it is cared for.

I've seen an awfully disproportionate number of people saying that their Civics are falling apart after a year or so, myself included.

Honda's motors are rockstars, no doubt, but those Ecotec engines hold their own too, from what I've seen. I think both cars have positives and negatives.

And I also think that the level of quality and perceived reliability is much closer than most would suggest.

Thanks for this incredible find. I am quite amazed by the performance. Shows how buttoned down the suspension is on the Cobalt SS. That time was not made on the motor alone. It shows a synergy of handling, braking and acceleration as well as overall balance.

Those Ecotec motors are quite stout and should last for the long haul.

still just a modern-day Cavalier, I'm sorry that car will never be considered cool, no matter what they do. Try having to rent a Cobalt while on a trip and then you can see how much of a FAIL these cars are, or worse yet if you actually buy one, telling girls you're car is a Cobalt (FAIL).

That's one of the dumbest arguments I've heard. Our cars are glorified Civics. That's all. That's nothing special or important. Civics are widely considered to be reliable, boring cars (of course the new ones are a nice exception).

The Cobalt is infinintely better than the Cavalier it replaced. I've driven several, and found them to be just as competant as the Civic, minus a more boring interior.

And PS, I got more ass with my black Firebird than I've had with my Civic Si. People hear the word Civic and go "Oh. Haha." Then they see it and go "Wow, that's a Civic".

No, the Cobalt isn't perfect: it needs an update. But to slam it to the extent you did is foolish. The Civic Si is nothing more than a glorified Civic. There's no difference.

:yeahthat:

Ding Ding Ding...same drivers? Same Conditions? Pro Drivers? Journalist Drivers (aka horribles).

So many things go into it...I doubt a cobalt would put down an = time of a Evo MR/STi if the Stig got inside all 3 of them. He'd be taking turns in the EVO at 100mph. Not someone who probably took them at 60-70mph.

It's not something that's going to easily leave peoples' minds for a while when GM has a broadcast to amp it's new cars and state that they left out stuff from cars sometimes and they claim they know they had crappy cars. Doing that and then saying, we realize what we did, but trust us now and it'll be ok. I'll tell you what, alot of people out there wouldn't buy that **** from a woman that cheated on them.

You're so lucky. What all came with it? Did you get the sunroof or lsd?
I wish I would have saved my money a little longer and took a trip to AJP and had everything done right instead of getting the s/c. I like the s/c, but I want more now.

Gm has not broadcasted this car in particular, and the malibu is pretty nice for what it is. I guess there is no changing the mind of stubborn brand-loyal car owners. It's best to be open-minded and give credit to cars that deserve it.

I don't even think reliability is the main issue. Great performers, but I think the Cobalt is ugly as sin. Which is why I don't care for one.

Never thought the Si was the fastest compact, and that wasn't why I bought it. Hats off to GM though. Best bang-for-the-buck car for performance.

Man this car is sick, it also sounds sick it comes with the GMP performance cat-back system, the seats are way better then they where, beautiful and fast car and on top of that you get a pioneer system with a 10inch custom sub in the truck and the amp to push it.
That also came in the SS\SC but man that system hits for been factory.

I don't think the GMPP exhaust works for the LNF...not sure if they're coming out with one but I'm about 99% sure they are. No more leather seats because I guess people slide around too easy in them. And they respond to the small amount of mods available very very well.
