I guess you havn't searched this board and saw some of Cavemans works. He was the first to do a an HID retro and has led the way. I've seen his work and it is top notch. There are numerous threads with pics of how incredible his work it. Unless you have proof to take back up your statments and compare it to his, I would just leave it alone.
Yes, I have seen his retrofit work and it is very impressive. That is why I am so taken back that he would advocate something as amateurish as velcro or zip-ties to mount a ballast. It's like Da Vinci painting Dogs playing Poker on black velvet. Not something you would expect from someone like that.

These are both good places to mount the ballast. Mounting the drivers side to the battery hold down is a very good idea.

For the right side, I would recommend that you run the power and bulb source wires under the air conditioner refrigerant line and secure them with a zip-tie (yes there is a valid use for them!) to keep the wire from chaffing over time.

I would imagine that you had somewhat of a time getting the bulbs in from the top.

Good ballast placement. They are nice and hight and will stay dry. Not as stealthy as placing the ballasts in the wheel well, but still a good solid placement.:thumb:

Yea i had to unbolt the ABS pump to get to the passenger side then just said screw it, and took 1 of those plastic pins out of the fender and squeezed my arm in to get to the bulb. Next time around the fenders are commin off lol.

Good point tho on the passenger side, didnt' think bout them rubbing w/ vibration from the engine on the ac lines.

Bump!

I'll be taking my bumper off this weekend to troubleshoot an issue I've been having and to replace my wire harness. While I'm in there, I was concerned that my ballasts are in a location where they can get wet. Furthermore, I'd like to mount them where i can access them witout taking my bumper entirely off...

I looked in the sticky thread at the top "MY DIY HID INSTALLATION" but didn't see too many places to mount them that were both accessible from the top (so I can check my connections and replace the ballast if necessary) and 2 WATERPROOF.... (or at least a more dry area).

Do I also have to worry about how close to the engine they are? I would think so as we don't want them to get extremely hot.

What do you all think?!

Thanks! :eyebrows:

EDIT: I suppose it would help to show where I have them mounted currently... I hope XENIN doesn't mind if I use his pic:

Mine are currently in the exact same location (look at the outer-most edges below where the turn signals would be). I fear water can get to here and I can't get to here without taking the bumper off in the future.

I have one of mine mounted in my engine bay near the abs pump and I have the other located in my finderwell
Bjorn said something like you thought your ballasts had gotten wet and you had them where the pic above has them... he said you thought that's maybe what was causing your issue... is that the case?

Are your accessible from the top or do you still have to take your bumper off to get to them?

Yes they both are acessible the one in the fender all you have to do is turn the steering wheel and peel back the fender you wouldn't have to take the bumper off and the other ballast is in the engine bay, but my ballast were never wet, when I installed them and got rid of the problems I was having, I tested them out and washed my car to see if they would get wet and they are just fine, I've also driven through heavy rain since the install and I have no problems at all

Hmmm, so it remains a mystery as to what the problem was? What were your exact symptoms again?

Also, which side did you keep in the fender area? Do you mean you have it on that little horizontal bar as in the picture above?

Thanks!

I kept the drivers side ballast in the fender area taped down with double sided tape and its mounted in the area thats directly in front of the tire, kinda hard to explain
