First off: this isn't meant to say roof racks are stupid. Some people actually use them, and I think that's fine.

This is directed toward hipsters with their extra-small Threadless t-shirts and ironic Keffiyehs that think roof racks with a BMX mounted atop of them look somehow cool and cutting-edge. I was waiting for the day this would die, but as the years go by it feels like this is actually getting more popular, to my disgust and dismay. Luckily it hasn't really caught on here, so I figure I'd make a preemptive strike =P

God, please stop now. Especially if you're one of those fashion-sheep that think slapping a bunch of skater stickers on the wind deflector at the front (where it says THULE or Yakima) makes you even more hip. I rank it up there with rusted hoods as a display of stupidity. Way to go, you've just added weight at the worst possible spot on your car, because you think some black bars sticking out on your roof to mount your imaginary kayaks that you'll never own is making a fashion statement. Worse yet, if you think it's JDM. You want to be true JDM, sell your car, get a Suzuki Aero and waste thousands on it, then you'll be like 90% of the car enthusiasts in Japan.

Now I know some of you will think "wHy u g0tta h@te y0!" on your self-perceived aesthetic jet-setting, but you'll thank me 5 years later when people come to their senses and realize how ridiculous it looks. (and in another 10 years it'll probably come back with a vengeance as "retro-cool," sigh).

Totally Agree....

....However, I'll have to admit, I do own a few threadless t-shirts, but I'd consider myself on the opposite end of "hippie tree hugger".

i have a roof rack i personally don't care for the look, and would rather not have to deal with one but it beats having to buy a truck and more than double the amount of money i'm gonna have to be putting in for gas and insurance and all that.

Plus if you're not gonna use a roof rack why take the hit on the mpg's?

I agree with the OP having a roof rack for looks is a complete FAIL!

I wouldn't describe it as ahead of its time, more like a timeless design. The s30z is very much inspired by the Jag E-type, Ferrari 250 GTO, and Toyota 2000GT of the 60-70s era. Very much like today we see Hyundai taking styling cues from Lexus and Mercedes Benz with their new Genesis Sedan. Anyways, I digress, if you don't intend to put a snowboard (or some other oversized sporting goods) on that roof rack; take off the roof rack, you will get better MPG and handling.

I thought this thread was pointless until i saw the z pics :drooling: ... I want a roof rack personally because I live in south florida and would love to take my kayak without using someone elses truck. And as for the trend or whatever, I have seen some fresh cars with roof racks, but not everyone can pull them off. I'm 50/50 with this thread....

Do people really put bike racks on their cars as a "mod," not being bike riders themselves? I had a bike rack on my last Civic, the look grew on me, but I put it there because I made the mistake of putting my flatland bike in my back seat... one time. Left grease all over the cloth seat, never got it out.
