The purpose for this thread is to outline my research, build, and installtion of FN2 Civic Type R tachometer and speedometer clusters into my 2010 Civic Si sedan.

Please don't post negative comments. I don't want future readers to have to sift through page after page of how many people don't think this is a worthwhile mod. If you think that, this thread isn't for you. :)

Ever since I set eyes on the FN2, I was in love. I was pretty disasspointed when I found out Honda had no plans to release it anywhere in North America. So I settled for a few videos and photos, and eventually bought my FA5. Even then, I felt like it lacked something, style wise. A large part of what draws me to a car is the interior. It's where you spend 100% of your driving time, so you should always enjoy what you're looking at. Well the FN2 tach cluster calls to me. I find it simple, yet elegant, and much more so than the FA5's factory clocks. So, about a year and a half ago, I set out to find a set of clusters. Only recently have I gotten my hands on some, which brings me to this point.

I don't have pictures to post right now. I'm limited on what I can do on my work computer, so I'll update the post tonight with what I do have so far. Current updates will include pictures.

So here's some basic info to get started. I'll go into detail about each portion as I move forward with the project.

I started off with wiring diagram research. What would I need to make it work, if at all possible. The US Civic service manuals are easy to get ahold of since I work for Honda. The Euro Civic manuals, not so much. After much digging, a few emails and PMs, someone on a Type R forum sent me the necessary schematics that I needed. Most of the pins where in the correct position and only a few needed to be moved, a couple were omitted due to integrated controls on the cluster, and one will have to be added once I finish my auto climate control conversion.

The size of the cluster is huge compared to the factory one. There will definitely be some work involved in mounting and fitting a garnish for it, but I'm ready for it. Using some inspriation from "portabuddy," (see this thread: http://www.8thcivic.com/forums/i-c-...rical-security-navigation/87556-portabuddys-car-puter-w-10-screen-200-pics.html ) I feel like I can make the FN2 clusters feel at home in the FA5. I did also purchase the FN2 tachometer garnish, with all of the climate controls and push button start, but have two climate controls in the dash would be beyond redundant. More on this later.

I'll be posting my results of the installtion this evening. :woowoo:

First update!

I got the dash apart, stock tachometer pulled, and the two pins that needed to be moved completed. Hooked up the FN2 cluster....and it worked!!! ....almost! Everything works except the fuel gauge and the brightness on the cluster. The iMID screen is flooded with red, so something isn't right. I ran into something similar when I converted to an EL cluster in my Prelude.

The stock speedometer cluster doesn't work at all with the cluster, which I expected. The turn signals work, but it doesn't get a good signal from the tachometer. I hopefully can secure an FN2 speedometer and have it here in the next couple of weeks.

The tach cluster is much larger than the stock one, which again, I assumed. Here's a few pictures to hold everyone over! I'm going to review the wiring schematics after I get some food and see if I can get this sucker working tonight.

Ignore the scratches on the screen. They look a whole lot worse than they are. Someone in Customs must have not liked me and didn't pack it back the way it was. :(

I'll have to shave a portion of the dash to fit it back as far as I can. I also purchased the FN2 tach surround, so I'll be molding that into a single piece with my factory navigation surround. :)

I'm afraid shipping alone on a dashboard would be out of what I wish to spend on this project.

I worked on it for a bit more this evening and wasn't able to get much further. The iMID screen is still overlit, while the speedo cluster has no light at all. From what I've determined, the FN2 speedometer cluster is required to have this conversion work properly. This is also evident, as the MPH/*** selection does not work or provide a "beep" like normal. Luckily, I just scored an FN2 speedo cluster and it should ship in the next few days.

What I've learned so far:

The outside air temperature reading is lost. Lucky for me, I'm also in the middle of an automatic climate control conversion. The FN2 cluster uses a reading directly from ACC modules to get the outside temperature, so the feature will remain. In addition, the ACC uses a sunlight sensor. The tach cluster takes advantage of this and integrates automatic headlights.

The iMID screen is very cool! It notifies you of exactly which door is open (including the trunk), tells you exactly which seatbelt isn't buckled, active MPG, a yellow key reminder, along with many other features. Once the iMID screen is visible to my camera, I'll make a video showing off all the features it has available.

nice bro, this would be to overwhelming for most of us. if you are able to make the climate contra work you should make an in depth diy on it. many people have question if the cc from hybrids, non usdm civics and csxs would work but nobody has even attempted it as far as i know.

Sorry I missed this before.

I know several people have attempted to install the FD2 clusters before with no luck (or at least no evidence). I assume that it's not a plug and play situation. There are probably a few wires that need to be moved, added, or subtracted. The service manuals for the JDM Civics should contain the wire schematics. It would simply be a matter of comparing them to the USDM Civic and seeing what's different. Granted, you'd probably need some translation. That said, they are a bit basic, and it could probably be figured out.

Thanks for the kind comments and subs. This is exactly the motivation I need to keep on trucking!

Speedometer cluster is shipping from the UK tomorrow, hopefully arriving in time for next weekend! I'll be wiring up the Select/Reset and Info buttons this week, so progress will go forward. I will also be spending a little bit of time on the auto climate conversion.
