I've never been worried about the R18 in my 06 EX coupe, I know it should last a very long time, but I'm still curious as to the long term reliability of the automatic trans. I'm only at 218,000 km on mine and it still runs great and knocks down 45 MPG on long highway trips with ease, and the trans still shifts perfectly. This is easily the most reliable car I've ever owned, and I just love reading the updates in this thread to see this car going above and beyond what most people would ever be able to achieve. Kudos!
 
Keep ON TOP of maintenance items. I follow the "maintenance reminder" on the dash. I use Mobile1, 0W-20 and original Honda filter (air and cabin filters too). I also drain and fill the transmission fluid every 30,000 and (and again for the next oil change). Again, I use original Honda ATF fluid. I keep my car clean and salt free during the winter months (as best as I can) especially the chassis.

This certainly helps: My commute is 80-90% highway and I'm very easy on the throttle and car overall. If you race your engine and drive like a moron, your car will not make it.

BTW, have you ever replaced ATF filter or just drain and refill? How many miles on the clock for you?

Pat: I've seen on this thread a guy with his original tranny with 300,000. I saw somewhere else a guy with 400K+. I think the secret is simple: 1) regularly change the ATF, 2) go "easy" on it.

From what I understand, the "filter" is only a metal strainer. For it to be clogged would mean something is crazy wrong (tranny damage/really dirty ATF). It doesn't really filter anything except very large particles suspended in the fluid. If it were a "paper" or proper filter, I would say change it.

Like I said, I'm on 215K miles and never touched it. I may or may not get it replaced, but additionally I haven't bothered b/c of it's location (behind the air filter box).

I would say leave it alone unless your ATF looks black and dirty. IF not, my guess is that you are fine.

EDIT: to directly answer your question, they make no mention of the filter being changed so I assume NO.

That's good to know, because I do go pretty easy on it (I generally drive with a light enough foot that the trans shifts at around 2000 rpm most of the time) and I have been keeping up with the fluid changes too (and using nothing but the Honda fluid too)
 
Thanks man, I appreciate it. Yeah I have seen videos/threads and it's location is kind of complicated. I'll stick to religious 30k and Grandpa driving :p

that's how I used to drive, but with my new route (more uphills), I'm forced to take her to 3K rpm, LOL. (1st world problems). It should be emphasized that taking it easy on the tranny is very important.

yes, but there comes a time where one has to wonder how much longer should I take this before the inevitable happens. Even so, with those with high miles, motor on!!!

Can you tell me if its okay to use heavier oil in my honda
When I bought it the owner used 10W60 shell, I decided to pour lighter oil 5W40 is it okay to use this kind of oil, Im from Poland the climate is moderate but in winter it's about -25 degrees celsius nightly and on the contrary summer can reach up to 35 degrees. I had blinking pan light issue I replaced oil pressure sensor and it's just fine, no light at all.
Im a bit confused cause ultra light oils like 0W20 5W20 or 0W30 are good for fuel consumption but still Im wondering if they provide good engine protection.
You ve been using 0W20 amsoil for a long long time and my question is if this kind of oil is good for the engine parts I mean for the metal crankshaft belt or bearings. There is so much fight over the oil issue on the local forums. What do you reccomend, my engine mileage is 266 kkm its approx 165284 miles in 7 years.(r18a2). regards /Paul
 
I am just shy of 300k miles. Been battling an emissions issue now for the last several months....new valve on top of canister, new canister, new Cat, they just dropped to gas tank to check it, now they are saying its the evap solenoid. Very frustrating! Engine and tranny are still solid so here's to another 200k!

It could be the solenoid on the intake manifold, I haven't checked that yet. I have replaced the canister and solenoid near the fuel tank a couple years ago. Here for the past couple of months I've been getting and evap solenoid code along with a O2 heater circuit code daily, but this past week I haven't had a single code thrown. The ECU is original along with the engine harness so it might be time to change them out.
