I did some searching on this site and it seems that this problem has come up at one point or another with a few other members but with no real resolutions.
Low and behold my newly purchased 2010 Si (Picked up on Jan 16th) started to make this noise within 2 weeks (600km) of owning it. As I was told by the sales manager and a journeyman mechanic, with these new cars theres really no break in period anymore, just no constant prolonged speeds, no full accelerations or hard braking. Best bet is to vary the revs of your shifts to stretch out the motor so to speak.
In doing this I would get into vtec at some point whether its at 5-6k, a few times into 7k and really nothing above it, with most shifts occurring between 3-6K.
Anyways, when i first got the car it never made any noise when vtec hit, just a very smooth transition and a noticable pick up in the car, as vtec does.
2 weeks in to driving i notice that once i get above 5k the car makes a rattle/vibration/tinny noise from the drivers side.
I take it in and the dealer needed it for 2 days to diagnose the problem. Now I used to work at this dealership that I service at and I know all of the techs pretty well so everything was in good hands.
actually the shop Foreman handled this problem himself, but after a regular journeyman checked interior panels and anything on the inside that could cause that rattle. They a few loose things tightened them up and it was concluded that nothing in the interior was causing it.
Day 2 - the foreman hooked up a stereoscopic monitor with 6 attachment points that can be stuck on various parts of the motor, he can listen to any noises/vibrations from inside the car while driving. He tested 18 different points in the engine bay (all parts of the motor, tranny, mounts, exhaust as well as others) and came up with the following conclusion.
The noise does not come from the valvetrain, tranny, exhaust or actually any physical moving, or mechanical parts.
The noise DOES COME from the air filter/air box. When the car revs up, and more air rushes through he claims it creates a turbulence inside the box which causes it or filter to rattle. He claims that if you remove the air filter and drive the car that the noise will go away, I have yet to try this but I will follow up on it when i have some time.
He suggested getting a K&N drop in filter as it may help. Ill get more details from my work order later.
But what do you guys think? Anyone else encounter this noise/anomaly?
The foreman has never heard it himself, I have driven many Si's, my friend has an 08 Si, and I have never heard it either until now.
