Do you think it's worth the money? I am thinking of aftermarket. Any good or bad experiences??? Thanks for your help.

I had my last two cars rustproofed and I have to say that it made a difference. The first two cars I owned rusted within 4-5 years, just after the corrosion warranty expired so when I got my EK I decided to get it rustproofed. Got rid of it 10 years later w/o a spot of rust on it.

I know that rustproofing adds 5-6 bills to the purchase price, but IMO it's well worth it especially in the great white North.

Here's a note on Rust proofing/inhibiting and undercoating.

You can get it if you want, just realize this.

All cars are primed/painted and clear coated. The entire frame goes through a priming stage, sealing everything from the outside world. then it's painted and voila. An air tight seal from outside agents.

Notice in this particular photo, the entire frame is painted, where would the rust start? (If you look at your frame too, you will see, it's all primed, sealed, they do this for a purpose, to prevent rust)

When your car is assembled, parts added (like spoilers) and holes are drilled, grease and/or other lubricants/sealants are applied to retard the contaminents that may cause rust and corrosion.

If you get a paint scratch down to the bare metal, you've disabled the factory applied rust inhibiting coating. (primer, that was locked out anything with a air tight skin of your frame)

Rust proofing/inhibiting is somewhat of a scam. It's a piece of mind, it looks good on paper, if you pay too much for it then shame on you. (I had a 1995 Chev Blazer until just this July, and the only place rust formed were two places , one on the rear hatch where someone tried to use a crobar to pry it open, and another where a dork in a toyota scraped his bumper along the bottom door panel and cracked the paint. No rust protection, no nada, and the body was flawless but for those places.)

If you have rust, best solution is to remove it with steel wool, apply some wd40, wipe , prime and paint. make sure it's dry before sealing the exposed metal.

Just my two cents.and a bit of a rant.. kinda.. weee... :vtec:

What about undercoating? Is it good for the car? I heard from someone that in M/T Honda's there is a plate underneath the engine and over time the bolts come loose and it tends to make a rattle noise so he told me to get undercoating. What do you guys think??? THANKS!!!!

Find that plate, undo the bolts, zap them with some bolt glue *the name escapes me, it's blue or green translucent* - ahh , THREAD LOCK - that's the
stuff, tighten the bolts, voila, they won't come loose.

If you're car is so low it scraps all the time, then any undercoating will scrap off too. Best to just apply your own grease as mentioned by strCIVIC.

You'll have no problem with any of these issues for as long as you own the car, Guaranteed.

That's true...if you live in Hollywood, CA. But in southeast michigan not a chance. My 07 civic has 3-4 small areas of rust on the inside bottom section of both doors. With only 8100 miles and weekly car washes, I'm less than happy about it. My 2001 civic EX with 95,000 miles had less rust when i traded it in for my 07

I guess that's what some people here don't understand. In some parts of the continent, like Florida, rustproofing is useless, but here in Canada it helps a lot especially since 2-3 months out of the year we have salt on the ground.

One theory against rustproofing is that when not applied properly it actually traps water and contaminents inside the coating. I don't know about you guys, but from my own experiences with the dealership techs, chances are they aren't doing it properly.

The other thing is the undercoating acts as a shield against the factory paint/primer/coating so rocks and debris don't gradually wear down the factory rust inhibitors.

I've old a lot of 15+ year old cars and it seems that undercoating generally helps... I also live Canada near the rockies.

Has anybody ever heard of the rustproofing that requirs you to install an electrode and an anode to the front and back of the car -the current running between them unhibits the formation of rust because the car is negatively charged (or something like that)?

I've heard of this. When I got my new car, one of the dealers here in Toronto told me that they would install that if I wanted to. I ended up buying the car from another dealership and they sprayed the underbody of the car with that black tar instead of the electrode.
