Hey guys,

My oil life went down to 15% and the change oil light came on shortly after. I have made an appointment to get my oil changed at the dealership on (1/12/08) And I was just curious...How long can you go on average b4 your car is in dire need of a change? Not that I would run it into the ground...Just curious.

I change my oil religiously at 3000 miles. I think the honda oil meter just calulates a % of oil life by dividing miles driven since last service by the recommended interval (5000 miles?). Oil is to engine as blood is to human, when Honda tells you theres 15% remaining it's a reminder that you're getting close to the end of its usable life.

The life of oil also depends on how hard you drive the vehicle, the harder you drive it the more diligent you should be with frequent changes.

just check the dipstick to make sure ur not burning any and that its clean and change ever 3or4k u choose :)

i rarely look at it except when i reset it during an oil change........usually its at 40 or 50%

the 1st change it was at like 15 or 20%

Yea I think this is what I was trying to get at. The Honda warning really doesn't mean squat if you know the life of your oil and how hard you drive it. It's more of a reminder than fact. I just use one of my tripometer's between oil changes so I know exactly when to change my oil :)

Yes it will stay on plus when you hit negative it keeps dropping every few miles i was at negative 75 once i didnt want to be there but i had no time to get an oil change. I checked my oil it was just fine so it wont cause any harm unless you really beat the **** out of the car and you physically see the oil is low.

i once overheard a service advisor talking to the service manager at the dealership:
one guy brought his oddyssey for a service and the guy told the advisor that he didnt change the oil for the first 40k miles of the van. i cant believe it didnt run dry...

RED OIL CAN? That's the low oil pressure indicator. "The engine can be severely damaged if this indicator flashes or stays on when the engine is running."

Or AMBER WRENCH? That's the maintenance minder indicator. "This indicator reminds you that it is time to take your vehicle in for scheduled maintenance. The maintenance main items and sub items will be displayed in the information display."

To estimate how long it will take YOU to hit 0%. Take miles that you've traveled since the last oil change until you hit 15%. Divide by .85. Multiple by .15. That's how many more miles you will probably go before you hit 0%.

Service News September 2005 said:
The system shows engine oil life as a percentage, which drops over time as the vehicle racks up miles. It starts out at 100% with fresh engine oil, and winds down to 0%, signaling the oil life is over. The system counts down oil life based on engine operating conditions (both normal and severe). If the engine runs at higher temperatures and rpm, or at low temperatures during short trips, the oil life will deplete faster than an engine running under more normal conditions.

i have had my oil changed three times since ive purchased my 07 si...i have 8000 miles on it..my next oil change is due at 9000 miles..i never knew i was supposed to reset my oil life..so tonight i was driving and i finally got the 15% oil life light along with a b1 light..read the manual reset it and checked the about the b1..do i really need to do all listed?

the reason ive had three oil changes with such low mileage is because a jackass messed up and a friend caught it while changing the tranny fluid

I just chanegd my oil with mobil 1 synthetic!

funny story i was supposed to get a free oil change from the dealership because I had just recently bought my SI and was supposed to pay for the difference of a full synthetic oil change (30$)!!!

My service advisor kept reminding me that i will pay an extra 30$ and when i came to pick up my car the cashier made a msitake and thought i had purchased a regular oil chaneg so i got a synthetic oil change for FREE :dancing:
