i installed an ebay cai on my r18 and took my muffler off. my butt dyno noticed quite a difference, and it seemed my gas miliage improved. you wont need to reprogram your car. youll have to disconnect your battery durring the install and you should be fine from that. no CELs on my car everything is running perfect. as for exhaust, i think you would benifit more with getting one then if you were to just put the cai on but im sure you will still notice an improvement if you dont get an exhaust.

 

It's a 50/50 shot with what k.sanders has written. Some have all the problems in the world, others have no issue at all. I had the K&N typhoon on my 2011 lx prior to going turbo and had CEL's with decreased fuel milage around town, improved on the highways.

 

Hey drunken, are you sure your fuel mileage didn't decrease because you were getting on it a little more after you installed the intake?

Pretty sure, it was 95% highway usage. Same route, speeds and traffic. I may just be the one case to experience a decrease..... but now with the turbo im at 46-48 depending on traffic.

 

People getting these cel sensors problems cause there not properly installing them correctly.

Love my K&N typhoon sri..... never had a cel in almost 3 years since I installed it (although it was more difficult than I thought it would be), and my butt dyno tells me it was worth it or maybe its just the better sound :dancingcoolsmiley

Free cai/Sri. Remove the rubber hose that goes from the intake box down to the intake resonator, deleting the resonator adding much added sound, this is what I have and it's louder than most cai. Will not cause a cel

Lol. This is what I did too. Except I put a screen in front of the hole just so that no big debris can get in. Don't mind the HPS sticker. Its been gone already.

 

There's a DIY sri thread for the r18's here somewhere, or you could what these guys are doing and just remove that hose. In terms of whether you should get a cause/sri I would say don't spend the money when you can get the same performance out of DIY job, unless you want the bling. Exhaust? Everyone could do with a freer flowing exhaust. The sound, the throttle response and the power increase is well worth it. Now these parts will give your car a bit more pep without a reflash or a flashpro, but you will be able to get the most from them with a tune.

With that said...please remember that the r18 is not a "performance engine" and as such doesn't respond as well to mods as say, the k20. Bolton's may only net a few horses, so don't expect a rocketship experience from your r18 with intake and exhaust.

I got a ebay CAI 11 weeks ago and it sounds a lot better and I feel like the gas pedal is more responsive, everything else is stock and still good and I think it is worth the 60$ spent on it but I wouldn't spend a lot of money on one because its just a pipe taking air from one place to another.. I am going to buy a nicer filter though once this one gets old

 

There is nothing wrong with taking out the intake resonator, I did it for a while before I bought my CAI and it helps to take it out.. I think they put it in the car to be more quiet for the old people/lamos who buy the car

 

why you buy a cai if you did this before isnt it the samething or did you want the bling in your engine?

 

A drop in filter isn't going to do anything substantial. Removing the resonator gives the air a more direct path to your intake with less restriction and therefore will improve performance.

I had a drop in k&n and recently switched to injen cai w/tbs. my butt dyno almost feels like i lost some power. No cels or any problems. I wasn't expecting much but im definitely disappointed. Im in vegas and its starting to hit 90 degrees. I had a short ram on an ek and never had heat soak issues. It almost feels like its too much of a distance for air to travel with this cai.

 

im getting a ebay cai soon. hopefully the power increases a lil

@JamesMang: By removing the resonator and intake piping forward of the filter box, you create a Short Ram Intake effect, which pulls in warmer air from the engine bay but also has less restriction. You likely won't feel the difference in power, but your engine will breathe better and your ears will thank you. As mentioned, probably the best free mod you can do. Like I said before, a drop in filter isn't going to do much but allow your engine slightly more air through the same restrictive, turbulent intake piping.

 

I know it may sound silly cause its just removing one fitting but i'd like to know which one exactly... Been looking all around and can't find a DIY on the resonator piping removal... Anyone?

 

I just had a question for r18 ebay cold air intakes,
people say the filter is trash, so they buy a different filter for a cheaper route than getting a brand name CAI?

 

Honestly if I were you I would just spend the extra money and get a name brand. The only reason I say this is because usually the knock off brands have issues. I'm speaking from experience, I bought a pair of headlights from eBay just for a diff look. They blew out about 2 months after install, end up putting stock ones back in, long story short headlights , plus install and uninstall was like almost 500 all together could have gotten a retro fit with that.

 

See, it really helped because i thought the fitting to remove was lower near the resonator itself.

Btw what kind of mesh did you use to cover it? Is it the hydro mesh people use on their CAI or ..?

 

It's screen door mesh. The steel one. I bought a foot from a local hardware since home depot doesn't have it. Lol. Don't use the plastic one, it might melt. Good luck!!

 

Now from what I understand these screen door "screens" can restrict airflow up to 50%. So it may be better in some circumstances that letting your air filter do all the work itself without the pre screen. Has anyone noticed any significant increase in MPG with the CAI versus the RAI and Vice Versa?

 

The screen that you see there is just to keep the debris out of the box. I don't think it restricts anything other than debris. Again, for me it was just all about the sound. Even if we put a real CAI or SRI on our little R18 the most gain we will get I believe is 5HP??? Increase?? Dunno I never dyno my car.

I did this and honestly the best 1.25$ spent on a screen at dollorama.....awesome sound with the k/n drop in filter............i love it at 3000rpm............and at woot too........lol

That's all intake or you changed something on the exhaust? Sounds mean!

 

Now take it a step further like I did, and cut the lower part of the airbox open from the stock and inlet towards the driver's side.
