Problem with Napa Gold 1356

Just had my oil and filter changed by my non-dealer mechanic. I handed them my Napa Gold 1356 and oil to be changed. As soon as he cranked the engine, oil started gashing out of the filter. Tried another Napa and same result. The old filter's O-ring or gasket was in tact.
He finaly put one of those cheap Honda compatable filters on and there was no more leak.
He visualy compred the top of my old filter (15400-PLM-A02) and the Napa Gold filter and you could tell that the Napa filter was more flat on the face but the Honda filter was substantialy more concaved toward the inside of the filter.
I put the same Napa Gold 1356 on my wife's Acura RL 02 a couple of weeks ago and there was no problem with it.
I believe both the acura and my 06 civic use the same type filter.
Any brain storm is much apreciated

When I went to Autozone, they told me the only filter that was made for the 07 civic Si so far was Wix... I returned it a few days later seeing as I couldn't get my filter off and just had another place change the filter and they used their own.

Wix is the same as Napa Gold.
You couldn't get which filter off? The wix or your old filter?

I believe Wix/Napa Golds are made by Champion Labs. They are good quality filters, relative to the spectrum of the market. Maybe you just had some bad luck?

The Honda Blues (Fram) are just fine, even though they're Frams. Currently, I'm using some filters made by Toyo Roki, which is Honda's JDM original equipment filter manufacturer. It seems to be of good quality... as far as I can tell without cutting a filter.

Napa Golds are fine to use. In all reality, media filtration is not a huge issue since differences are minor. The only real risk of buying a low-quality filter is that the bypass valve may be sub-par, and get stuck in bypass mode for the duration of the oil change interval. That means no filtration whatsoever!

Problem with NAPA 1356 oil filter on 09 Civic

I know this is an old thread but I experienced the same problem as Marteen that started this thread. The NAPA filter threaded portion is not as deep as it needs to be for this application. It's a flatter filter. The threads bottom against the unthreaded part of threaded nipple in the block. You either get a leak or in my case the filter tightened against the shoulder on the threaded nipple and then when you take the filter off the whole nipple comes out of the block. That's not supposed to come out as it's steel threaded into aluminum and is designed to stay with the engine. I measured everything and I'm sure the issue is with the 1356 filter. Luckily I had a different brand filter that is deeper. I'd caution anyone from using the 1356 NAPA Gold filter. You don't want a leak and you don't want that nipple coming out every time you change the filter. If you have someone else change your oil they may not know or care that the nipple is coming out. But threading steel back into aluminum repeatedly is not a good idea.

NAPA Partsman from Alberta Canada here.

1.) Yes NAPA filters are made by WIX. Strip the first digit off the front of a 5-digit WIX number to get the NAPA Gold Number.
Now add a 2 to the front and you have a NAPA Silver number.
i.e. WIX 51356 = 1356 Gold or 21356 for Silver.

2.) Newer Honda's should use the 7356 NOT the 1356.
ALWAYS go by application, not by cross-reference

Although almost identical in specifications ...There IS one significant difference between the 2 part numbers.
The 1356 has a CONVEX mounting flange
The 7356 has a FLAT mounting flange
(See PDF attachment.)

Why does this matter?
The newer Honda's have aa approx 1/4" hexagon nut incorporated into the outlet nipple on the engine block or oil filter adapter.

IF you use the 1356 in the place of a 7356, you risk bottoming the threads at the nut and not allowing the gasket to compress the correct amount.

BIGTIME leak potential!

Hope this helps
