Has anyone installed one of these? I have an 08 oem nav but these are tempting. It would be nice to add usb and bt. Plus the car play stuff looks cool. Will I lose anything?

I just installed the AVH-4000NEX, which has everything but navi built in. So I can't comment on the navi functionality, but everything else is identical. Once CarPlay comes out, I'll be able to use the Maps application on my iPhone.

I love it, and I'm really picky when it comes to having a nice interface. I've held out on getting an aftermarket head unit for so long because I've always found them to look really corny compared to OEM. This one looks great; it's super clean and responsive. Even without navi built in, I can still use my lightning to hdmi adaptor and mirror everything on my iphone (including maps) if I wanted to. I'll probably never bother using the DVD player. Appradio is garbage, IMO. But everything else works really well.

As with any aftermarket HU, if you don't wanna lose your steering wheel controls, you'll have to also pick up a steering wheel adaptor, like the Metra ASWC-1 ($49 on Amazon). If you're keeping your stock amp, you'll also need an amp integration harness. Scosche is the only company I know of that makes one, unfortunately some of the wires are in the wrong place and it involves simply pulling them out and slotting them into the right pins. If you need to, check out Lezard Valeth's post on installing his Parrot Asteroid Smart for a more in depth explanation.

Bsbab****, I'm by no means an audiophile but it sounds much better than the stock ex premium audio head unit. I even kept the stock amp and speakers. The most noticeable difference is the bass sounds a lot tighter, the sound overall is much more balanced and clear. I think it's due to the 96khz/24bit A/D converters that most modern head units have. The audio out is very tweakable, with a dedicated subwoofer output and hpf/lpf controls. But again, since I kept the stock amp, I haven't had to adjust anything other than my preferred eq settings.

Im having the Pioneer X850BT installed next week.

Only thing that sucks is when using the Pandora app you have to use a cable for the iPhone and with Android you can stream via Bluetooth.

and i have an iPhone... :banghead:

I don't understand why the iPhone can't use the Pandora app via Bluetooth as well...

Im still waiting to get my car out of the shop for an AC fix then I can install my Pioneer unit. Until then Im trying to figure this out.

See in this video the guy is using an Android phone and he can select stations etc on the actual unit while streaming via Bluetooth with no cable connected.

Pioneer navigation AVIC-X850BT review and dvd parking brake hack HOW TO CONNECT BLUETOOTH PANDORA - YouTube

Thats what I want to be able to do with my iPhone.
This is confusing as to why it can be done with Android and not iPhone.

Super Nintendo game from 1994 lol...

I called my local place and made sure they were willing to install this unit with the "parking brake override" they said no problem but will cost more.
They want $400 for the install...fack!
Best Buy Geek Squad said they would install it for $105 but they will not do the "parking brake override".

That stupid parking brake to enter navigation, use phone, and play dvd is so stupid...not to mention all the dumb warring screens you have to click through every time on this unit from what I see.

If you're up for it, there are a lot of guides around here that will show you exactly how to install it yourself. Otherwise, $105 sounds like a fair price considering the amount of time it would take, especially if it's your first install. No way I'd pay $400 though. As for the bypass, it's usually a simple 3 wire device, black to black (ground), green to green (e brake wire on stereo) blue to blue (amp remote wire on stereo). Maybe buy the part yourself, and take it to a different best buy? Or any other local shop, you might find someone willing to do it. My buddy went to a best buy to get a stereo installed, the guy was a hungover teen that just showed him how to do everything and let him use his tools for free, lol. Might not be that lucky though.

good info being pass around here. gg, thanks for the CarPlay tip.
I like the NEX, too, but like you said, might be better to wait around and see what Alpine does with CarPlay.

speaking of the ebrake override, the local shop here is quoting an additional $35 for that service. and an additional $99 to retain the steering wheel controls. i'm guess that's $50 labor and $49 parts (like you mentioned about the Metra ASWC-1).

probably gonna sit on this one for now, but still interested in everybody's thoughts

Thanks for the pics civicgg,I see what your talking about now. I will probably do the same thing.
Is that an iPhone 5 with a lightning interface cable?

Here is what I got to use with my iPhone 4.

Amazon.com : IPOD IPHONE 4/4S CD-IU201N VIDEO AUDIO USB TO 30-PIN INTERFACE ADAPTOR CABLE FOR PIONEER APP RADIO MODE AVIC-Z150BH AVIC-X950BH F950DAB F950BT AVIC-X850BT SPH-DA210 SPH-DA110 : Automotive Electronic Security Products : Car Electronics

Looks like if I upgrade to the iPhone 6 when it becomes available I can just unplug the 30-pin connector and plug in the lightning cable into the usb cord. If so I wont have to gain access to the back of the Pioneer unit when I upgrade to the iPhone 6.

XLIV, darker looks better but kind of a pain when reversing at night. Mudbug, great suggestion, will have to pick one up. I do like to hide the cable entirely though, because I sometimes park on a sketchy street for work. I made a custom cover to hide the head unit as well; I just took an aftermarket trim bezel and lined the middle part with some black leather.

MrMckay, not a lot of differences. The 8000 has a capacitive (like a smartphone) touch screen instead of a resistive (pressure sensitive) screen. The buttons are also a bit different. I wish the 4000 was capacitive, but the screen is still really good and responsive anyway; surprisingly it even supports multi touch gestures like pinch and zoom. The 4000 screen is detachable, which is kind of cool but I never take mine off. Otherwise identical software and other features, couldn't justify paying double for those differences.

The iPhone control works just fine. It's easy to use and it works reliably, if that's what you mean. Most modern head units have pretty good iPod/iPhone integration anyway. I've used head units and adapters that would randomly disconnect, but this one never has. I like how it stays on iPod mode even after you turn the engine off. Some units annoyingly switch to am/fm mode, but this one doesn't. Siri works perfectly as well. For phone calls you can adjust the mic volume, which is actually helpful when your caller is hearing speaker echo. Carplay isn't out yet but it looks pretty good.

Yah I was watching some reviews and didn't see much difference beside the price, the face plate and of course the nav, but who need that when you have a GPs.
Reason why I ask about about iPhone because I was also looking at the Pioneer App radio 3 and saw a lot of negativity when trying to use your iPhone/android with it.

Thanks for the help

Payed $400 yesterday to get my Pioneer X850BT installed...well last night I was driving and when I turn on my headlights its supposed to auto dim. Checked the settings and it is set on auto dim.

They hooked something up wrong...about to go back up there today and see if they will fix it.
Its so bright at night its impossible to drive...

Got it fixed.

They didn't even hook up the orange illumination wire.
He said I figured your Pioneer unit would adjust to night mode by the time.
I said no,please hook it up.

He got it working but he said he had to tap into the light switch wire or something because my harness that came with my Ebay double din dash kit didn't have the wire he needed.

Much better,I can see at night again lol.

Also the dash kit I got from Ebay the color is off,not by much but there is a difference.
Here is the kit I used:
Aftermarket Double DIN Radio Stereo Install Navigation Dash Kit Wire Harness | eBay

Guess I will just have to get used to it.
The dash kit also came with missing screws and one main plastic peace needed to install the unit. He rigged something up to make it work he said.
After looking at the Ebay item picture again it was only missing the screws, not some other plastic peace he showed my on the computer.
I guess I should just have bought the dash kit from them but they wanted $80 and I only payed $30 for my kit.

Also the sun glare on this unit is horrible,I wish I could remedy this.
Most say those sun glare films you buy and stick on don't work.
Im still trying to fix this issue...might have to make something.

I had run that iPhone cable from the unit like you did civicgg.
Was a good idea but the cable was driving me nuts run on the driver side so I reran it on the passenger side tucked under the center console.
I think I will like it much better on that side.

Glad you got it working. Don't worry about the color being off, many users have reported that even the OEM Honda parts are a bit off as well. And yeah, dashboard glare sucks on the 8th gen Civic; it's inevitable having a gigantic windshield and the way the screen is angled. I just crank the dimmer and a bit of the brightness when the headlights are off. If the X850BT has a glossy screen, an anti glare screen protector may help. Good idea about the cable; my cable is a bit too long so I just looped it a couple times before it sticks out of the side, seems to stay put that way.

I've had my eye on this as well. I'm glad to hear there are improvements even when using the stock amp/speakers. Some concerns I have are running the HDMI/USB wires to the phone (snaking along the center console looks like a great way to handle it, thanks for the pics!) and where to place the mic. I want the mic to be great for Siri and passable for calls. Where did you guys put the mic?

I decided to finally pull the trigger on the 5000nex this week. I didn't really care for installing it myself so I had bestbuy so it (I know). Anyway I really like the head unit and I made sure they installed the steering wheel controls adapter. Also they made sure it works with the factory amp/sub. I had an oem navi previously but the installer still installed an aftermarket dash kit. I'm not sure if the oem dash kit for the nav would have worked. I'm pretty happy with everything but the aftermarket dash kit doesn't quite match color wise and the air controls are now a little stiff.

I'm really interested in one of these units, but there is one thing I've been wondering... Everyone that has installed one of these in their car said they've snaked the USB cable under the center console and out the side or some other place. Well, I was wondering if it would be possible for that cable to connect to the car's USB connection inside the center console... Anyone? Help? Thanks.
