Is it OK to mix oil brands?

I've got about 1/4 quart of Royal Purple 5w30 leftover from the time I tried out Royal Purple. The last time I changed the oil, I put in Mobil 1 EP 5w30 (love it!) Anyhow, that 5 qt. jug of Mobil 1 has lasted around 5500 miles, and I am now approaching the MIN dot on the dipstick.

Just wondering if there's any harm to topping it off with the 1/4 qt. of Royal Purple -- both are synthetic, both are 5w30. If this isn't recommended, I can just change the oil.

thanks for the info! :)

I'm just your average car owner, really, but to me... the additional cost of Royal Purple wasn't worth it. It burned more than any other oil I've tried in the Si. The 5 quarts I bought didn't even last 5,000 miles before it was due for a change. Smelled pretty bad without a cat, too; worse than other oils.

I ran Mobil 1 synthetic in my '97 Civic for around 9 years, and over 200,000 miles, and it was still running strong when I traded it in! So consider me a Mobil 1 fan :)

Oh no, I don't mean burning as in the color of the oil, just the way the oil level degraded over time. I don't recall driving any harder than usual with Royal Purple, and I'm rarely in VTEC. The smell during warm-up and the cost factor were my main reasons to go back to Mobil 1. I'm a broke college student; can't afford $60 oil changes every three months :p

There's a member here who was doing ~12,000 mi. oil change intervals, and having a sample sent out for evaluation. He made a thread for each different type of oil he had evaluated, not sure if he ever tried Royal Purple, though. Definitely worth finding the threads if you're interested in any other oil brands. I do remember him speaking highly of Pennzoil Platinum as an inexpensive, great-performing synthetic oil.
