Cruise MAIN?

When you put the cruise control on, it says 'cruise main'; what does it mean by main? Good chance it's something obvious I'm not thinking of, but I want to know after somebody pointed it out to me.

I just don't know what they mean by "main". It doesn't matter to me what the light says or does, I just want to know what the "main" means. Although you'd think the light would change when you set the cruise, instead of it just telling you when you have it on; could be some stupid people out there who need help knowing when there cruise is set.

Main system? What is the secondary system?

Light below it? I have no such light that turns on when a speed is set (2009 Civic SI).

When you hit "Cruise Main", cruise control is not yet activated. You have to then hit "set", on the steering wheel.

It is a safety feature, so you don't accidentally throw the car into cruise. You have to do the two-step process.
Well ya, but that's not what this thread is about.

Honda's have a long history of Cruise Main.. the 96 'lude sitting in my driveway has it too. Its just a Main On-Off switch for the system, nothing more, nothing less.. Won't hurt to leave it on (and I do and always have).
Ya, but what is the secondary on/off switch? There isn't one? Then why MAIN?

I use cruise control every day, but I don't leave it on when not using it, the green light annoys me (OCD).
Same.

= cruise, mang

?
This is the best answer so far.

Well... I don't know about you guys, but every car I've ever been in has had to turn the cruise control system on first before it can activate. In my old Volvo I had to flip a switch on the turn indicator arm and then press another button to set the speed. In my Toyota Sienna you have to push the button to turn the system on and then you can set the speed, and in our other Volvo S80, it's the same where you turn a switch on first, then set speed.

Nothing unusual in here. The main just indicates that the system is on.

Safety feature? I don't know about that. They have standard things built in (I know it won't activate unless you're going over a certain speed for a certain period of time), as soon as you touch the brakes, it deactivates, or as soon as you press the clutch, or even push it out of gear, it will deactivate (I've tried, I was curious :p)

It doesn't hurt anythign to leave it on. Just more buttons I guess
You didn't understand the question, which was specifically why "cruise main" instead of "cruise"/"cruise on"/"cruise set"/etc

I always considered it to mean Main power for the cruise.
As opposed to the secondary power?
