To get the best gas mileage that is. I am having trouble getting good mpg, its been hovering around 20mpg (100% city, 5spd manual).

The car manual goes like this but I tried this and the gas mileage sucked! (20mpg average)
1st to 2nd: 15mph
2nd to 3rd: 27mph
3rd to 4th: 39mph
4th to 5th: 53mph

I am now trying the highest gear possible for different speeds. Trying to keep it below 2k rpms.
25mph - In 3rd
35mph - In 4th
45mph - In 5th

Is this lugging my engine? Bad for my engine? What gear are you usually in at : 25, 35, & 45mph to get the best gas mileage?

I seriously think it's that you're city driving. Not much you can do if you're in a lot of stop-start traffic.

its not easy to get good gas mileage in the city. shiftin too low could waste more gas at times...cuz if ur at too low of a rpm, u give it more gas to speed up. i shift at 3k for every gear in my Si and i get good gas mileage. i usually go about 280 miles or so and still have about a 1/4 tank left. so im sure i can go over 300. if u dont have a need to hold a gear or give it so much gas then dont. esepcially for city driving. im not sure about ur gear box cuz mine is a 6 speed but i usally shift at these...

1st-2nd about 10-12mph
2nd-3rd 15-20mph
3rd-4th 22-24mph
4th to 5th 30mph
5th to 6th 40mph+

u can go to any gear u want for driving as long as u keep the engine above 1000rpm. and if ur going to speed up u must downshift...dont just give it more gas cuz ur gonna waste more and put stress on the motor and trans.

but yea also durin the break in period u waste more gas. but city driving u cant expect good gas milleage....20mpg is actually good/decent for city.

I try to shift at about 2000-2500RPM for every gear. I do approx 75% city driving, and I get about 500 miles per tank average. I also take it pretty easy when accelerating and stuff.

I swear I could get 600 miles on a tank if I did 100% highway.

All you have to do is get the car moving in 1st. Then grab sec. Keep the rpm's low. 1750 to 2500 rpm depending on road surface and road elevation. The R-18 will do the rest. Get the tire pressure up. Coast up to lights if you can. And light time. 30 mpg was a give me in my Civic. 40 to 41 mpg could be had with extreme hypermiling.

u must be getting over 40mpg city...thats REALLY good..

my auto normally shifts at or below 2k rpm and with 60% hwy/40% city i get low to mid 40s

my best tank has been 500mi/805km

I drive 160 miles, pretty much all highway, round trip each day for work and I average between 34-36 miles per gallon. I take it easy most of the time, shifting right at 3000 rpms. I've tried to get better, and I think I would need perfect conditions to average over 36 mpg. And I'm in Colorado, if that makes any difference in gas milage.

I do it on 3000 rpms too. I used to do 3500 but I made the tank of gas last me a few more days in my normal driving conditions.

I shift usually around 3000- 3300 rpm and so far i've gotten 300 miles with 1/4 tank still left

If you want to save gas, shift like the auto trans, between 2k-3k. The lower you shift the better gas milage. Once you go over 3k, you are wasting gas. Remember the vtec range? 3.5k? so I'd assume if you go over 3.5k you really wasting gas then.

on average...

shift out of 1st - 25mph
2nd - 45-50
3rd - 60
4th - 70
5th/6th? wtf?

if i'm not feeling like eating the 3.50 gas prices, subract like 15-20mph off of all those speeds. =p

my best tank of gas (city/hwy) was during "break in" 600ish miles. passed 4k rpm like once... cause i was getting antsy. haha. I think i averaged about 27 w/ a decent combination of both situations. best overall tank was about 34mpg. Straight shot drive from ohio to NYC. I swear I made it 2/3 of the way there without having to fill up lol.

My best was about 900km (540 miles)

Of course I am driving a coupe (more aerodynamic), and a DX (the lightest model)
nice numbers..i'd imagine having a DX makes those #'s easier to get to

my longest lasting tank so far was 528 miles/850km..i think i was still 1.5gal out from empty..i was already 20 miles past "no bars" so i didn't want to stretch it much further

Call me out if I'm wrong but :vtec: doesn't come into play until at least 5k. Anyway, the biggest question I have is does downshifting save gas, or waste it. I have heard that it takes more gas to keep the engine idling than it does to downshift and what not. Any thoughts?
