What do you guys think of the Typhoon?

I know this has probably been asked and covered a hundred times by now, I've done research and searched but everyone's builds are so much different than my mild DD.

I have an 07 FA5, bone stock except for a K&N drop in and a Magnaflow axleback. I've heard lots of great and not so great things about both CAI and SRI so I had a few questions pertaining to my setup.

If I were to break down and get a Typhoon, my questions are:

-Would I need Flashpro to run it? I plan on getting it anyway but was in no rush at the moment. I plan on using Vit as well, so once I have that, obvoiusly compatibility wont be an issue. But say I was to install it anyway, how bad would the car hate me?

-Also, I have heard the horror stories of heat soak. I'm only wary because I've never experienced it. I live in central Alabama and our days are usually hotter than they are colder. Is this something that will come back to bite me in the ass?

-Last question. Because I plan to run Flashpro one day, and because this is a spirited DD, would it be wiser to just run an HPS silicone hose to the stock box and call it a day? I have faith Vit will still be able to do a great job with such a mild setup. I dont have a header or catback, nor do I plan to.

Just seeing what everyones opinions are, if they would have done things differently, or any reviews on the Typhoon. Thanks for reading!

No matter what, everyone says to get Flashpro first, I think I should just listen and do it haha.
And heat soak isn't that big of a scare to me, I don't sit in rush hour bumper-to-bumper traffic. My true goal to be honest was a little pep and Sound, mostly, to compliment the Flashpro tune.
I just didn't want to sacrifice daily-drivability or efficiency/durability for a "cool sounding" SRI intake.

yea man i just saved and got a bunch of stuff i wanted at once. as for sri, i have a skunk2 cai so idk. ive done alot of searching on 8th for sri too once i hydro locked one day after a flash flood and most seems takeda to me. (i do alot of searching and reading mostly why i have been a member for years and have so little posts lol)

good luck brother and enjoy

I know I'm reviving my own thread but I had a few more questions.

Would it be worth it to stick with a stock Typhoon and flash it?
Or should I graft a better lower intake portion in? Something along the lines of a bottom CAI or Mugen scoop.

Again, Im not looking for sick power, but I would like better airflow over the filter here in hotass Alabama lol

Like everyone else said, if still don't have flash pro yet get that. And honestly, If you have a little extra $$ laying around you should just get a Hybrid Racing CAI with an aem pre filter and be done with it. Best intake on the market. Its a more complicated install but nothing too crazy. Very noticeable difference power with fp and the intake over stock. Tested: 2006 – 2011 Honda Civic Si Hybrid Racing Cold Air Intake – VitTuned Blog

I can't comment on the effectiveness of modding the typhoon if you already have that installed.

I was considering that exact intake but couldn't justify the $$ just yet. Once (or if) I do a full bolt on job, including new manifold and throttle body, I would consider the better intakes. But someone once told me unless you go big on these cars, just an intake isn't worth going crazy about. Flashpro would be better money spent, and FP with an intake is a different story.

But that being said, would I need to wait to install an intake like the Typhoon until I had FP, or is it a plug and play option? I do understand that no matter what, I wont get the best results out of any intake (even stock) unless I tuned the motor. But would I be damaging my fuel/air trims by running a big open intake like this??

Idk what people are complaining about heat soak in DD scenarios. Idk what your goals are, but mine was to get a bit more pep out of my Si. With k&n Sri, vibrant catless header/cat back combo and a base map using auto tune from Flashpro I have been running 3+ years with about 30k miles with not a single problem. I live in Atlanta and have had to commute through downtown during rush hour in 100 degree weather and my car performs the samend with no stutter.

I have a DC Sports SRI (mostly because I found it for $110) and I wrapped it in gold heat wrap. I also have thermal intake manifold and throttle body gaskets. I'm more interested in not losing the power I have rather than gaining with an intake. I'll make some gains with headers and exhaust and the Turbo I plan to install.

I was considering modding the intake as well with gold heat wrap or gold tape, can you contest to how well it works and stays on? One of my main concerns was also not losing power, the car is already peppy enough for me to have fun. I just liked the sound of the SRI, and it may sound ricey but of every car mod I have ever done -they were always for function- this would be the first I would do just simply because I like the sound it makes!! Just being honest lol

Revival time...

I've got a 2011 FA5, bone stock aside from HFP muffler and FP. Only got them because I hated rev hang and I liked having Vtec engage smoother and earlier. I've been considering a K&N intake for awhile simply for some throttle response and sound, but never pulled the trigger.

You ever get it done?

Kn is one of the best sri in the market. I just picked up the af dynamic sri (exact same as kn) and i love the build quality. Im telling u its same as kn n its half price. Ebay has two left and afd doesnt have em on their website. only for 9th gen. I made an unboxing video of it look it up. Af dynamoc intake civic si on utube. Ima do an instal vid tomorrow n probly post it up if it works out on same day

I ran a K&N Typhoon un-tuned for a bit and it was fine. On the first dyno pull we did to get a baseline, the tuner was impressed with what the car put down with just that intake alone. I really enjoyed the sound of it, but there's no real noticeable power increase, you might feel like you're getting a little throttle response. it really does sound good and after tuning you could expect to see a little more gain than if you were just bolting the part on. I actually have that kit I could sell to you if you wanted it. Hell I have all kinds of stuff I could sell to you as i'm parting out my car. My Flashpro will be for sale soon, have a rick spec'd 3.5" SRI too, as well as the K&N Kit. There are other goodies too!

Here I am, back reviving my own thread, but I had a couple of updates and a couple of questions to go with it. I've finally acquired and installed a K&N Typhoon and I'm very excited! I had a few things I wanted to check, to see if any others have had similar issues.
First off, stats about the install:
-I had performed and idle-learn/ECU reset (whether it was necessary or not), 15+ mins without battery power, then 15 mins of idle with no A/C or electrical.
-I had also placed some hose-foam, wrapped with HVAC metallic temp-tape on the main coolant line, where after the install I had noticed contact between the line of the intake tube. Everything else went to plan.

Now for my questions:
-I am experiencing a little bit of bucking/surge upon immediately releasing the throttle, and this is most prominent around 25k-3k RPM. Its not drastic or even noticeable, except to me as its my daily driver and I have learned every sound/feel/issue with the car already, prior to the intake. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the increased throttle response, (the OEM rev-hang and throttle dampening settings just becoming more noticeable/dramatic).

-Also, at 4k RPM (about the same range the Typhoon begins to really growl), I am hearing almost a turbo/spool like whistling-sound. (I say turbo-/spool- like, because its tone and frequency fluctuate with the throttle control). This is an additional sound on top of the metallic, growling sound of the aluminum intake. It almost sounds like a slight air leak, air being pulled in from a tight spot that may not have sealed. But I am almost positive this isn't a leak, and maybe just the nature of the air moving over the velocity stack and into the tube. AND, if this is an air leak, what damages could I possible be doing? (Besides an obvious adjustment of the ECU over time to compensate)

Thanks for reading and I cant wait to hear any feedback anyone may have.

Just the extra air being sucked in, is your idle consistent? I've been running my k&n v1 for 3 years un-tuned with no problems, rev hang went away by itself, no CELs, zero problems, only extremely loud vtec crossovers and angels singing at 8300 rpms lol, just bought my flashpro though, coming in on monday, really wanted to get on a dyno, but the price per pull is a little stiff here lol.

Also the bucking may be because of a abrupt let off of the accelerator, do you have after market mounts or filled stock ones? I noticed with the stock mounts the motor/trans assembly moves around a lot and may cause "bucking" during abrupt deceleration and acceleration, might want to look at that.
Idle is consistent and good (although it fluctuates some when in neutral and slowing down). No CELs or codes being thrown, I've checked with the scanner. It is indeed very loud and I wont pretend I don't love it lol. Flashpro will be awesome, keep me updated, soon be doing the same, and attempt to tune this intake to the car.
I have stock mounts now, but that's interesting. That would make sense for my symptoms, I'm starting to think it may also be the increased air combined with revhang/throttle overrun, injectors turning on and off on throttle adjustment, and a crazy ECU with too much going on lol. Im almost positive a tune would fix me up
