Did an oil change last weekend and used Mobil 1 5w-20 Extended Performance. Bought one jug in late 2012 and one earlier this year in April from my local Walmart. I used a funnel from Advanced Auto Parts that has a metal micro mesh filter in it. When I was done pouring I found two pieces of a fiberglass like cloth, stiff, at the bottom of the filter. One from the first jug I bought back in late 2012, saw it come out, and one from the new one, saw that one come out also.

I sent an e-mail to Mobil last weekend and have not heard anything yet. Wanted to make everyone here aware since there are a lot of M1 users.

Hmm, I always watch the oil coming out of my 5qt bottles and have never seen something like that, and I go through at least 4 bottles a year between my and my mothers cars.

Weird how the same stuff came out on two different batches though.. makes it hard to believe... but I'm not saying I don't believe you! On the used container did you check the cap? I think it has a white foam seal (or did they stop using that? I never notice), is it ripped?

You have me convinced on getting a filter funnel though, never thought of it till now. I've just trusted that it'll be clean.

The cap was the first thing I checked and it has the white foam/paper insert but it's perfectly fine. Im trying to get an explanation from Mobil about this. I'm pissed how something like this could of been inside my engine.

I would suggest anyone get a funnel with a filter on it, so if they see something like this again Mobil may need to check their lineup. The funnels are $4 and they come with a shut off valve and cover too.

Wal-Mart buys by lots, (pallets upon pallets ect.) of whatever oils they sell and that they buy the raw materials to bottle the oil, thus leading to a cheaper overall price. the fiberglass fragments you found could be for this reason.

True, but my thinking is they buy more than anyone other retailer so they get it at a more discounted or more less price than the second guy so they can offer it cheaper. People make it sound like oil companies have two seperate product creation/development lines...one for walmart and one for everyone else

if you ever compare the bottles' labeling on what you would purchase at AutoZone, it differs from the jug purchased at a Wal-Mart location.
Walmart gets the batch that does not meet M1 standards thus a huge price difference. Usually the batch is off a little bit but never heard of that before.
How do you guys know this?
