Autoweek reports that VW is going back in time with a Supercharger-turbocharger combo on the new engines to debut in the 06 golf, starting with 1.4L and making their way later into the 1.6 and 2.0L versions .

The 1.4-liter four cylinder that will produce 140 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, with a performance version producing 170 hp and 199 lb-ft. all from a 1.4L ENGINE!

1.6 and 2.0-liter versions of the SuperTurbo, which would produce 195 hp and 240 hp resp !!!

The system, dubbed SuperTurbo Compounding by supercharger supplier Eaton, eliminates turbo lag while boosting overall power and fuel economy by 15 to 20 percent. Eaton, the apparent supplier of the supercharger for the engine, says a car fitted with the system will likely be shown at the upcoming Frankfurt show

Today’s computers make the complex induction system seamless in the new application, which uses a mechanical supercharger operating at low engine speeds to increase low-end torque, and a turbocharger engaging at middling revs to provide added muscle up high. Once the turbo reaches sufficient speed to provide boost, a clutch disengages the supercharger and an induction valve closes, bypassing the supercharger.

kind of like the days of the mr2's with the twin-charged engines

I call my driving "spirited" im completely in control of the vehicle at all times and never do it with my fiance or friends in the car. I love going for early sunday morning drives on the back roads in ohio (besides all the bugs). Hitting the twisties is so much fun especially when you have upshift and downshift in them.

BTW- my driving idol is steve mcqueen ( the movie Bullitt ), so i like to double clutch occasionally.:driving:

Yeah, I tend to do more "spirited" (good word :)) driving when I'm alone... same as I tend to crank up the home theatre louder when I'm alone :)
