TSX cams need help please

69741 Views 198 Replies 51 Participants Last post by  Shadow_FG2
Hi,
Im interested in purchasing a set of 2006-2008 tsx intake and exhaust cams. Im new to cams, so any help would be appreciated.

Current Modifications:
-2008 Civic Si Sedan
-stock k20 engine
-AEM CAI V2
-Skunk2 header
-Fullrace 3" exhaust
-boomba motor mounts
-flashpro

my questions are:

-are tsx cams drop and go? no other engine mods needed? (aside from flashpro of course)
-how much do these cost brand new?
-whats a reputable place/website to you buy these from?
-how much do they cost to install?
-if you have a similar setup as mine, what performance gains did you make? feel free to share any dyno results
-how will these perform with a stage 2 supercharger?
-how will these perform with a skunk2 intake manifold and throttle body?
-how do these cams effect fuel economy?

thanks for your help.

I'm not concerned much with peak HP, considering I plan to have an ImportDPS SRI, J35 TB, RRC IM, Vibrant Header, and Go Power 3" Exhaust.

I am looking for a cam that offers good pick up in the low to mid-range, to help with daily driving. I figured this set up would be fun enough, just looking to improve the every day driveability of it, since it will eventually become my DD (hopefully not until at least next summer).
You want the tsx cams, I choose them for the exact reason. Torque below 4k is awesome, not much up top. Your supporting mods will compliment the cams.

here's my beef with a decision as stupid as this.

the drop in cams gain MORE midrange than the tsx cams, and they ALSO have the benefit of top end power gains.

Be a smart fellow, if you're going to rip out cams to put new ones in, don't go with OEM ****.

agreed, which drop ins do you suggest?
I can say that when I did a google search of the kelford stage 1 cams (whatever the name for them is), the first link that came up was to a thread here on 8th civic, and the STOCK Si cams had better power in the low to mid range than the kelford's did.

I'm open to suggestions, all you have to do is show me why you are suggesting something over what I have said.

No need to call someone else's idea "stupid" just because it doesn't align with what you feel is correct. Like I said, show me what you mean. I'm more than willing to listen.
That was a club rsx post. Depending on your mods you might not gain the midrange available from these cams. all cams are going to want good mods to back them up.

anyways, i would suggest either the skunk2 drop ins or the kelford 179-a's.

I will have results from mine when i get them, despite having mods that are more in line with stage 2 cams, i feel i can make significant with these cams, so we'll see.

Check out this link, it's even got dyno numbers:

JDM Intake Manifold and Kelford Cam Install - Honda Civic - Import Tuner Magazine

Also, talk to h0ndafanat1c, Full Race Geoff, Rick at ImportDPS, Hugh at Evasive Motorsports - all people who either are running or have experience running Kelford cams.

They have nothing but good things to say about them in terms of power, build quality, and reliability. I was seriously thinking about the TSX cams too, but after seeing some dismal dyno numbers, I don't think they're worth the money. At least with the Kelfords, you have the choice of revving them to 9K (with the proper supporting mods and valvetrain, of course), because they keep making more power after 8000K RPM where the TSX cams die off.

I am in a similar position as my SI is my DD and I plan on keeping it basically until it dies (hopefully years from now), so reliability is important. I just think that people get way too caught up in the "OEM factor," with the TSX cams and don't really look at the dyno graphs (I'm talking about tuned before cams and tuned after cams dynos). Kelford, and other DIC cams, are priced right up there with new TSX cams, so why not give them a shot? Anyway, I'm done ranting :).

Great article. Off topic, anybody know how well these Kelfords will go with a supercharged setup? I know somone mentioned "blow through" here when coupling the SC with TS cams.

Just to throw another into the mix: Go Power Motorsport V1 cams

Again, no 2 dynos are the same, so take the final HP/TQ numbers with some grain of salt. The point here is to compare "differences" between stock Dynoed numbers and modified Dynoed numbers using the same dyno and tuner.
any one know if we need to order the OEM TSX cam gears too?
SiSoldier, were you able to get some dyno runs with the TSX cams? How do you like the change?

Looks like you'll outbid me on the SC up for sale :deadhorse: Be sure to get some before and after dynos with the SC +TSX cams. I'm curious

I JUST text my tuner but he's not replying : ( same thing happened last week. I don't want to praise/hate them till after my whip is fully tuned.
Please post up your results on how you feel the car is once you get your tune done with the TSX cams. I am very interested to hear, as I would rather spend $300 on a set of TSX cams rather than $750+ for a set of aftermarket stage 1's.

Looking forward to hearing what you have to say!
I'm keeping sub'd

My wife is starting to notice my spending lol that supercharger will end my marriage if I buy it haha

Exactly my point, some exhaust/intakes cost more than these cams, amazing power for the cost.

It's confirmed...Friday Jan 27 @ Church dyno tuning! Full review should be up that day or Saturday!!
Great, thanks for the update Si! I'm excited to see the results (I'm sure you're REALLY excited to get the tune done!)

Good luck with the tune man, looking forward to a review this weekend. Enjoy!

You're comparing used cams to brand new aftermarket.

TSX cams new cost around 600 bucks.

The difference between an aftermarket stage 1 and TSX cams is that the aftermarket cams will have some sweet gains up top :D
I would not spend $650 on TSX cams new, or more than that on a set of stage 1 cams. I am looking to pick up a used set of TSX cams for around $300 and be done with it. There are better things to spend $350+ on IMO. I know I won't have the most powerful or fastest Si, but it will suit my needs and budget well.
So basically they are an amazing upgrade to buy along with bolt ons to get some extra power? Man why didn't I know about these sooner
i can't convince you people that these cams are worthless to spend your money on.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO RIP INTO YOUR MOTOR AND PUT CAMS, DON'T PUT TSX CAMS.

What's the point?
