I'm doing some work on your car and wanna replace the starter as a while you're in there kinda thing... There seam to be 2 different part numbers. Are they the same just from different suppliers, as in either one should work? Or are they unique and I need to check which one my car needs? If thats the case, is there a way of doing it without having to take it out first?

31200-RRA-A51
06312-RRA-505RM

edit:
any other "while you're in there" recommended? doing transmission rebuild, exedy stage 1, act ultralight clutch

Just seen on hondapartsnow the site says they're both the same starter but 06312-RRA-505RM is a rebuilt starter while 31200-RRA-A51 is a brand new starter.

If it were me i'd go the new starter 31200-RRA-A51, they have it on Amazon its the Genuine Honda one too, bit pricey tho.

Not sure what you've already done maintenance wise but while you're doing all that, tensioner/pulley/belt would be a good idea, also since you're accessing the starter - cleaning or replacing the gasket of the vtc would be good.

Water pump also if you have the chance - along the lines of the starter with preventative maintenance.

Hopefully you're going carbon synchros with the transmission rebuild - last longer and perform better.

ah, that makes sense... funny how the remanufactured one is more expensive tho, haha...

thanks for the tips on the belts and tensioner and stuff

I've actually heard the opposite... that the carbon synchros are more fragile and a bad shift can mess them up and force needing another rebuild? do you have personal experience with the carbon synchros? OEM or synchrotech?

Hmm I've never heard about bad shifting messing them up, and I guess I could see as carbon being more fragile but never seen much about that either.

syncrotech carbon syncros vs oem - Honda-Tech - Honda Forum Discussion

Check out this thread. "They last longer, but the bigger benefit is they will slow the gear down quicker so there's less wear on sleeves and hubs when shifting quickly. They do make a difference shifting at high RPM. For the very little bit extra they cost I'd use them. " - one of the posts on that thread

As for personal experience I had my transmission rebuilt on my S2000 with Carbon synchros from synchrotech and I can say that the car felt way more responsive, and shifting during higher rpm felt a lot better because carbon synchros slow down the rpm drop aka rev hang between shifts so I was able to stay on the throttle a lot quicker in between shifts.

Obviously that's a completely different platform - F22 engine and RWD so i'm not sure how different it would be when it comes to the K20z3

thanks for the personal experience note, makes me a little more comfortable with it. I still haven't had a chance to have a more detailed conversation about it with the guy doing the rebuild. He does lots of honda transmission for track cars and high power drag hondas. he recommended the carbon ones as well in a "this is what I usually do for your use case" kinda thing. he's usually booked months out in advance so its hard to get any time with him, haha... I'm thinking I'll go over the details when dropping of the transmissions

Yeah no problem, but I would go carbon synchros either way, sure you spend a little extra cash but overall will be better. Only see positives from going carbon synchros

yeah my reservations about the carbon was never about the price. With as much money as I'm dumping into the car this round of mods/maintenance, it'd be dumb to skimp on the better option over a couple hundy. I'm still gonna talk to the transmission guy, but leaning towards carbon now.

I've just done this job last week and here's some tips:

For the tensioner I went with ACDelco, best choice I've made, it made the install easier. The hardest part of the tensioner is holding the nut in the back of the tensioner while trying to tighten the main bolt on it which is near impossible to reach. The ACDelco one has the bolt threading into the tensioner unit making it a million times easier. I bought mine off of Amazon.

While you're doing the tensioner might as well do the belt and idler pulley like previously mentioned.

As for water pumps that's a bit hard, I haven't had to replace mine yet thankfully. But if I were to replace it with a non-oem brand I would go with a reputable one like Gates or any Autozone branded one since they'll come with a warranty (doubt you'll use the warranty unless the unit fails but great to have)

Amazon.com: Gates 42218 Premium Engine Water Pump : Automotive

Here's the Gates one I saw on Amazon for our cars, only $80 with the gasket, and looks good to me. (BTW Gates is one of the most popular oem-like companies especially for belts and waterpumps)

I was thinking to Continental for pulley stuff...? I know Continental does a lot of OEM stuff which is why I'm leaning that way. Although ACDelco is also an OEM supplier.

I'm kinda nervous about the water pump, kind of an important piece... but an OEM pumps is like 2x-3x the price. all these OEM "while you're in theres" are adding up to the cost of a K24 block really fast... lol
