Honda rep said the same thing to me, but I raised hell and dropped it off at their dealership the next day.. they fixed some other window defect I had under warranty but did nothing about the windshield and said they couldn't because they would have to order in and a bunch of other excuses(?).. ended up taking it to a local shop and got it fixed , still dealing with the insurance claim and stuff . Sigh
This all sounds nucking futz. I've herd and seen subwoofers blow windows b4. But nothing like this. Im anxious to see the pics the op has. Sorry bout your luck man. Hope it gets worked out
One of my friends had this happen to him in his integra. He was just driving along in the morning with his defrosters and his rear hatch's glass just shattered. It's not IMPOSSIBLE, but it doesn't happen all that often.
Same thing happened to me with my 7th gen a few years back, the glass looked exactly like Lyfe's. It was the summer time, the car was parked and not even turned on. No foriegn objects found in the car, just a bunch of shattered glass. I took some pics with my old phone but they are long gone, should have kept them. I was pissed!!!
My neighbor has a new accord with 5k miles on it, after parking the car and walking to the front door of his house he heard a small pop and turned around to see the glass intact but shattered.
This **** happenes sometimes if the glass is defective or the glass was installed incorrectly and for whatever reason was stressed.
I registered here just to tell all u non believers that this is a legit defect. This happened to my 08 civic sedan. It's a problem with the heat and microfractures I think. Anyways this is legit
Same thing happened to me day before yesterday. It was 34F outside, early morning, I had gone out to preheat the car to get the frost off the windows. Came back 5 minutes later, got in, headed out for work.
I'm 4 miles from my house travelling down a very nice, four lane rural highway when I look in the rear view mirror and decide to kill the rear defroster (window's clear), two minutes later, I hear a lour pop and assume one of my tires has had a blow-out. I slow down, car is handling fine, speed back up to 65 and look in my rear-view mirror and see what looks like frost on it. Not possible, I say to myself, it was clear 2 minutes ago. Look again and realize that the window is totally shattered into 20 gazillion pieces (yes, I counted thembut still intact. Wow, must have been the sudden cooling outside glass and thermal difference between outside/inside. So thankful that it's laminated, I'd have one heck of a mess if it weren't, I'm thinkin'... So much for thinkin'...
Cruise past an 18 wheeler, the sudden change in air pressure blows the entire 20 gazillion pieces of glass into the car! Brrr, only 50 more miles to go before I can get to work and call safelite or somebody...
Just happened to me. 2012 civic. Rear glass shattered but intact probably the tint is holding it in place. Top corners are shattered off about an inch in diameter. Looks like the defroster burnt through to the black border and caused the crack. Also could of been water getting into the seal... It was - 30 c with the wind chill. However if the windows can't take it then they shouldn't be selling them here.
This happened to me last Friday. I was driving in the rain. While I was going through an intersection I heard a loud pop. I looked in my rear view mirror and the rear window looked like a spider web of cracked glass. I got out to look for any holes, tree branches, etc. and found nothing. The glass was shattered and evenly distributed. I ended up replacing the rear window the next morning.
I'd like to add in that this exact same thing just happened to me. It was in the 60-70 degree range today and it was raining and I turned my defroster on and about five to ten minutes later I heard a loud pop and my back window was completely shattered. The only difference is it is held together mostly because I have tint on my back window.
As far as safety concerns and customer service goes, as a civic Si owner I am very unhappy, about a week ago I was driving down a road in my small hometown, It was a little cold out but nowhere near freezing. I decided to turn on my rear window defroster so that my view would be clear to see other vehicles in my surrounding area when I heard a loud POP in the rear of my vehicle. As you can imagine I was a bit shaken up only to find out that the heating element from my window defroster had caused my back window to shatter completely. So I made the issue known to Honda locally and even took the time to pose it as a safety issue to corporate at American Honda and I was rudely shrugged aside by a representative by the name of Keisha and was given no help what so ever. In fact I was told to get my insurance company involved for Hondas own manufacture defect. On top of all of this matter I realized that there were plenty of other newer model Civics in my area that are used as family cars. By the grace of god I didn't have any infants in my back seat, and for that matter I would have loved to have heard Honda's resolution to something of that nature.
This just happened to my civic si. I think it happened this morning while my car was warming up I had the defroster on and On my way to work I noticed the glass being shattered but intact! I went to Honda but they said they have to reach out to corporate but they told me not to have my hopes up cause they probably won’t do anything because it’s not under warranty. Which is BS!

Sorry but its not BS if they don't help you. Something goes wrong on your at minimum 9 year old car that is out of warranty then that is on you to fix. I know it sucks but **** happens. As other people have noted, tempered glass can just break. Maybe a rock happened to hit the window and cause a small crack that led it to break once the heater was on.

Actually this is false. The heating element can short in a isolated location causing the glass to become brittle in that spot. With any vibration or shock will cause the glass to craze and shatter through out the rear windshield.
