If you civic is overheating and you have a r18, there is a chance that you have a crack in your block. In the past 2 months I have seen 2 of them come in for this problehem and honda says there are some r18's. That the casting was to thin and the block cracks

Waw. Something new pops out everyday. I have never heard of so many random problems with any cars. I can't imagine what kind of a shape my car would be in 3 years. :eek:hnoes:

It happens. Volvo had a "pourous block" problem years ago with the early 960's inline 6 engine. Pretty similar to the R18's issue the aluminum was weak because of air or something, it'd crack and coolant would leak out.

Still sucks getting your engine replaced though, makes you wonder if the new one will do the same thing.

Yep. There were a few R18 owners that have reported their blocks had a crack in it.

hmm..

thats weired..
bcause i used to have an EX a year ago
and i didn't like the power at all so i was going over half throttle almost all the time..:vtec: so after about 5 months while i was driving i found out that the temperature gauge was rising up very fast... i pulled my car off the way and thought it was just an oil/coolant burn off so i refilled both and the temp got lowered to normal...and i never found any problems occuring after that..... but what i don't get is that the temperature actually dropped back to "normal"... does this mean that my cylinder wasn't cracked ? i don't remember the whole thing but i found my engine bay full of smoke...

well... i got rid of that car and now i drive an FA5 so its not very important to know but just asking...

This worries me now, am turbo and my R18 is doing fine for now, but if anything happens to it, like my block cracking or something like that, honda will say my turbo cause the problem and i will lose, nothing i can do about it..

But it seems to be rare problem, so am not to worrie about it, i will continue to boost all over the place with my R18:vtec:
