Hey guys. First post here. Recently picked up my first SI, with 250,000km's (beautifully taken care of). At first she was tearing through about 2 quarts every 5,000km's (oil change interval), but after driving her hard for a bit, it seems that my oil consumption has almost completely stopped. currently at a little over 1250km's on my 4th oil&filter change since i bought it, and havent even touched my top up oil (do the math compared to before), and the level is still well at the full mark. Before, i was topping up every couple days, as i drive a lot. its been weeks! Apologies for the potentially stupid post, and if it's in the wrong spot! Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything weird like this! is there truth to the italian tune up? Did i unstick some rings?

Thanks guys!

An engine that has been rebuilt may burn oil if the piston rings have not bedded/broken in. Properly rebuilt, break in should occur quickly with barely a puff of smoke or no smoke at all. If the engine smokes it may mean that something about the build and break in process is wrong. With luck, the rings will break in over a longer period of time and the engine will be OK. Or, it can continue burning oil and require a cylinder hone, rings and break in.

Perhaps you got lucky or perhaps the symptoms you described are caused by something else. I would contact the previous owner about the history although they may not be forthcoming about it.

Thanks for the response! The only thing thats been rebuilt is the transmission. The previous owner is very generous with the history and has been unbelievably helpful and honest with everything! Original motor, even with the original timing chain still in excellent shape!

EDIT- I'd also like to add that I don't think it was anything out of the realm of normal Honda oil burn, as I've never seen even the likes of a cloud puffed out the exhaust. Key word, 'seen'. Anyway, it's definitely not something I have any concerns about, obviously, I dont mind saving 40 (canadian) or so bucks between oil changes. Lol. Just curious if anyone else has experienced oil consumption literally stopping dead in its tracks. I've only ever heard of a car starting to burn oil, not stopping 🤣

Thanks again!
