Monroe quick struts, coupe and sedan difference?

593 Views 12 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  atomsmasher87
I needed 2 struts for a 2010 civic coupe DX. So I bought these Monroe quick struts from Canadian Tire. (Supposed to be part#172284 and 172285). From what I can see online, the left is for a coupe with the black rubber (172285) and the right is for sedan with the yellow rubber (labeled 172284 but looks like 172286 which is for sedan). Can anyone confirm? I tried taking it back for an exchange but the remaining 3 struts in stock all seemed to be mixed and matched as well. I'm unable to find 2 of the struts I believe are for the coupe, Are they interchangeable? Could I put 2 sedan struts on my coupe without issues?

You could look at the part numbers on rockauto and maybe figure it out.

If it were me I'd return both and get a set of KYB struts. Monroe are complete garbage in my experience. KYB makes the oem shocks/struts.

Thanks for the reply!
That's what I did to start, I compared them to the numbers and pictures of the same parts on rock auto and ebay, which leads me to believe the yellow one is for a sedan while the black is for a coupe. I was just hoping someone might have some first hand experience as Canadian tire is selling the 2 interchangeably it seems, also I'd love a set of KYB but unfortunately they're too expensive to have shipped to me and there's no where local that sells the full assembly. (Nova Scotia, Canada)

Take a look here my Canadian brother! I went with tein street advance z cuz it was the same price as Monroe all the way around. Free shipping Canada wide too
Truhart shocks work pretty good with my tein springs and reasonable price for the combo
OEM struts are superior in every way, aftermarket struts are not even close. Here's why, aftermarket struts aren't specifically dialed in to an exact car, but to a set of vehicles that they will fit and perform their purpose for generally speaking. OEM struts are dialed in by Honda engineers to the exact suspension of the exact model,,, fine tuned to the exact weight, taking into account that exact vehicle's entire suspension,,,, and then tested, and then refined until it meets exacting performance standards. I've tried aftermarket, and when I went back to OEM the difference was remarkable. If you're short on cash, can't afford OEM, I recommend you find salvage yard OEM struts with low mileage, and then aftermarket starting with KYBs. You're gonna get what you pay for.
The link I shared you is for KYB and free shipping in Canada... Also I would strongly recommend against buying used suspension from the wreckers. You have no way of testing it before hand and will have gone through the trouble of swapping your whole suspension just to find you got shafted by Billy Bob down at the happy goose valley wreckers.

Lolol that's what I'd be worried about buying used, but that's not really an option in my area anyway as I've only got 1 junkyard somewhat nearby and they don't have a single 8gen coupe. Even if they did the only low milage cars that typically go to junkyards around here are smashed beyond recovery which usually also includes the front suspension.

I do appreciate the link but I'm very cautious of where I buy stuff online, especially for what I consider a large purchase as I don't have extra money to play with right now.
That site seems to be about 50/50 for positive and negative reviews if not it might be even more negative than positive. Alot of the negative reviews I've seen mention the same issues with shipping, special orders and lack of communication as well which makes me nervous as it seems to be pretty common.

I spent $425 on the Monroe struts on sale and that was already out of my budget. The KYB struts on that site are $75 more and it's not the full assembly which means I would also need the mount and bearing as it all needs to be replaced in my car.

It's easy to say "just spend the extra money, you get what you pay for" as I've heard this multiple times already. Problem is I don't have anymore money to spend on them so Monroe is about as good as it gets for me. I was originally going to buy the autoshack strut assembly for $75 apiece but decided to go with Monroe for the extra quality plus a 5 year warranty.

I'll look into it a little more but as of right now I think I'm set on the Monroe struts, not really looking for suggestions just looking for someone who can answer my question if possible. although I'm starting to think that person doesn't exist as this is the 3rd place I've posted this with no luck lol

Ah that's a super bummer it needs the extras and not just the struts. I totally get the wearyness, if it helps I personally purchased tein street advance z from that site and would happily show you the bill of sale. I also understand about being out of budget. I'm sorry nobody can answer your question but if I were you I would just put a matching set in the back, it iiis just a civic.

It's actually just the front ones I need. My back OEM Shock absorbers still seem to work great, or did you mean just to have a matching set in the back?

I am curious though how much were your tein struts if you don't mind me asking, I'm assuming you received them with no major issues?
The ones I seen on there are definitely out of my budget but I couldn't find the right ones for my car specifically.

Sorry I misunderstood, doesn't matter much front to rear matching I just meant use a pair that matches to replace the existing ones. The full cost was $1085.06 Canadian, shipping was about 14 days. I also ordered a full set of bilstein oem shocks and struts for the wife's mini cooper and got them for $634.50 total. Shipping with them was a little longer and they didn't get me an order update until I asked.
I bought front struts from a salvage yard. The junked car only had 33k miles and was rear ended and totaled. Those struts worked great, zero issues, excellent ride. At $20 each vs hundreds new, it was an excellent bargain and helped me in a tight jam. Struts should last 100k. You can get lucky at salvage yards, just saying.
