Prologue:

  1. I have not searched to see if this topic is covered
  2. I do not care to use the search button for this topic
  3. I only care about those in Ontario regarding this topic
  4. For those of you "wanna-be Mods" and thread police who are itching to tell me to use search - Suck it.

---

I was talking to Nippon today and he was saying he was having problems getting insured for a modded vehicle. He also mentioned (and it's true), there are a lot of people with modded cars where their insurance has completely dropped them after getting into an accident because of mods.

I am with TD Meloche Monnex, and so I wanted to hear it right from the horses mouth. I called them up and asked them.

They said any performance enhancing mods are grounds for dropped coverage in event of an accident and that they do not have any programs to insure for modifications.

Even something as simple as rims is means for dropped coverage.

I am planning on looking around for other insurers but I highly doubt I will switch. I am already getting recognized for my professional affiliation through Meloche Monnex, saving me 30%, as well as my University Alumni discount.

----

My question is this: with so many people with so many mods...how do you cope with this? Do you just ignore and mod and hope for the best?

I'm not in Ontario, but I am in Alberta. I am insured with Wawanesa. I had an aftermarket stereo system in my car, not sure if this is the same as performance parts. My car got broken into and everything was stolen. They reimbursed me for the value of all items minus 10% that I had receipts for.

Ohh and next time, use the damn SEARCH feature.

Bel Air - i talked to nippon too bout this already and it depends on the agent you talk to.

I have all my mods covered by Bel Air paying an extra $20 bucks or so a month. From what they told me as long as you don't have engine mods. I went to an inspection station for them to confirm before continuing with the policy.

Bel Air according to Nippon says no performance mods which include engine, rims and suspension. So my question is why is this topic not standard and all agents provide conflicting information.

again you'll prob need to talk to 2 or 3 agents before you can go ahead and get the right answer.

So say you get into an accident in the winter and you have winter wheels and tires on your car, they will drop you? Id drop them if my insurance company told me that.

I would ask them exactly what they consider a performance modification and question them on things like the wheels and tires in the winter.

insurance companies/policies are messed up....
on one hand: some performance mod's could make your car safer (like tightening up your suspension)
on the other hand, people who buy these mod's usually drive their car a little harder...but still I think SOME mod's do present safety benefits.

I'm going to have to chime in here and say the main concern are standards. How do you explain that tightening up your suspension is safer? Who has tested what impacts it has on your car when it slides underneath a truck? You can see where I'm going with this. There's too much variation and when people put some mods that are cheap Chinese parts, it becomes a hazard, not a performance enhancement. I'm not stepping on your toes or anything. But the keyword is "some" and from an insurer's perspective, you have to account for all and they won't be able to do that with so much ambiguity in the situations.
