I used to think my Si's mileage was bad for a car without torque. I mean, factor out the premium gas, and it STILL seemed bad that I was averaging 23 MPG 80% city/ 20% hwy.

Then I got my wife a Mazda3.

Her commute is all city, with lots of stops, and a 3-block section is the longest she goes without a stop sign or light. Ok, so bad commute ... but she drives like a girl (no offense to girls!) and she is averaging ...

... 19 MPG ...

I got 18 MPG back when I used to drive my dad's 2005 G35x downtown and back. Wow!!! I don't tell my wife, but I am so pissed every time she fills up and I see another terrible gas tank. The Mazda3 has a 60L tank, and I'll usually fill up 48L and get less than 400 KM. Just friggin terrible for an "economy" car. Oh well ... At least the car is nice and a lot of fun to drive :)

Nevertheless, I'm happier than ever in my FA5. I drive it in a spirited fashion, VTEC often, cruise on the highway at 80+, and still have managed to average 23 MPG over almost a year.

Just to add to that. I think the Mazda 3's (non speed vesions) are not known for their economical sides. A lot of reviews praise the mazda 3's for the handling and fun factor, but generally on the lower end of the spectrum for gas consumption.

With that being said, my friend and gf both have mazda 3's. My buddy has the new 2.5 verision and the gf has the 2.0l verison. To be honest, they both avg either get the same mpg or a bit less than i do driving and i have a Si with i/h/e/fp. I do not drive the car in vtec at all times and i am sure if i did, the mileage would drop--but it's nice to know that if you drive the Si responsibly, you can get some great mpg out of it.

It's just the best of both worlds at times....Gotta love that.

Dude, i had a Mazda....that thing sucks gas as hell!!! is normal. my last car until a Civic was a Mazda and sold it because of the gas. Then i got my first Honda wow!! what a difference! now a friend got a Mazda3 the soport not speed...and she hates the MPG...is normal, Mazda can't handle HP's without gas sucking engines.

I also know someone with a Mazda 3 hatch (non Speed) and they get only 19. They also have a newer Maxima that does better, go figure. Yeah the SI is great on gas, I got over 30 consistently with my 07. I traded it for a new WRX which gets 18 (light footed, 65 on the highway). It is parked, trying to sell it while I enjoy my new Mazda Miata, which is getting 30 MPG with 900 miles on it! I am waiting for the new SI if there ever is one and will try to buy if price gouging is not a factor. Enjoy the MPG with your SI's!

lol. well, not to brag, just filled up tank today. i keep track of how many kms i get with a full tank. last one was 745kms and still had 1 bar left, I reset the trip every time to keep track. Live in Canada, we don't go by miles. Least I dont. But anyway, best kms per full tank I got so far since January is 820kms, that was mostly highway and little bit of city driving. And I don't granny drive.

so your wifes drives in extreme conditions, and your puzzled why the mpgs are low ?

my 2010 civic lx gets less then 17mpg 90% city AND 10% (short distance) highway. my 2008 coupe got about 19mpgs.

Thats with a base, non 2.0l motor. City driving tortures a car, oil, mpgs, and everything else involved with motoring. its no mystery.

Enjoy your SI and may your wife enjoy her Mazda3, peace.

This is the ?10th? time you've made this claim.

I still don't see how you're getting 40+ MPG... Are you driving an FG2? Cause 40+ MPG without "granny driving" is impossible
