I have an 07 as well and a refurbed battery pack is less than half the worth of the vehicle...if you’re planning on keeping it and continuing to drive it I think it would still be worth it to replace, especially if you re capable of doing the work yourself. Not sure the cost of the DCDC though, with that added it could be pushing it. Interesting that you can still run it without it. So is the alternator wired to charge 12v battery?

Hi HCHII2007,
Our friend's '06 Civic Hybrid has reportedly got a failed "motor rotor position sensor"and the red battery light stays on as well as the IMA light and the Check Engine Light. The 12V battery voltage was 11.92 the night it was towed back to her place. I charged the battery up on my 60amp charger and after disconnect it came to rest at 12.84.

Reconnected battery and ran engine, voltage varies with RPM seeming to top out at 13.8 VDC. This suggests to me that the battery is getting recharged.

The gauge to the left of the tach in the instrument panel does not show any green bars for the traction battery, so I suspect that means its below whatever threshold gets displayed.

There seems to be a hesitation when starting the battery, and I'm getting the idea that this is the system looking to the IMA to turn over the crank, discovering it is to tired, and then goes to the backup starter. This is confirmed because as I go through a series of restarts the 12VDC battery voltage drops while cranking and the subsequent static voltage is drops 0.1 to 0.2 VDC each time.

The scuttlebutt on this and other blog posts is that ones days are numbered if the red 12VDC battery light is on.

What I am hoping to find out from you, and other's, is what small alternator did you install in place of the EGR, the Fit pulley you used, and whether this approach has kept your hybrid on the road, and running.

We'd like to keep this car running until April 2021 or as close thereto as makes not much difference when she and her partner move into a new condominium project 600-ft. from a light rail transit stop. (I am moving with my partner to the same place, we and 22 other households are building this cohousing project together.)

I am trying to digest and ruminate on a Motor Age article I found to understand the systems and what depends on what. I guess the steering system is electrically operated, and likely operated from the hybrid battery, but then maybe not. I have yet to find and study the wiring diagrams. I have some experience negotiating around these big traction batteries on my Leaf, but I have no ICE in there...

Any help, anecdotes parts guidance will be well appreciated.

Thanks all.

We have a 2007 HCHII, where the battery was failing, and eventually the DCDC converter stopped working. I thought I would post this in case anyone else finds them in a similar situation, where it is more expensive to repair the car, then its value. I did have to remove the EGR, and install a block off plate, the car would not pass in a state with emissions testing. We were able to install a small alternator in the EGR position, remove the tensioner, and everything is operating correctly (aside from the EGR code). The car has left us stranded a few times (both times blew IMA fuse, last time DCDC converter went) and this is no longer an issue. Other posters have claimed to attempt to use the FIT alternator, this will not work as the FIT uses a different intake where the HCHII will interfere. So far, so good. Seems like a permanent fix.

We did use a FIT pulley, and get a belt 2in longer.
impressive attempt. it seems that you have removed the ima battery pack, dcdc converter and other equipment installed behind the back seat.
now could you mind to share the photo of what did you done, showing the all steps so that other can take advantage of it.

thanks.

Basically, the bracket bolts to the EGR location, comes up with a slotted hole to allow for tensioning of the belt. I can try and get you a picture later today if you want.

Provided your car does run, until the 12v eventually cannot run it anymore, I would expect an alternator would keep it going. I had only used the fit pulley as I was planning on trying to use a alternator, which ended up being too large. Any ribbed pulley with the correct bore size would work (and close OD)
A picture will very much be of help, please.

Impressive! Thanks HCHII for this post. I bought my used 2006 HCH from a user in October 2019. Since then I've had to change the DCDC converter twice. Very expensive. And I've been looking for a way out.

For now my car runs fine, I love the car, but for the dreaded red battery light indicator during slow movement and low rpm.

I must adopt this alternator option. Just let me know with the pics exactly what to do. Unfortunately here in Nigeria we have very few mechanics who can repair hybrids, so I'm completely on my own here.

If I'm able to install the alternator, would it work hand in hand with the current DCDC converter to charge my 12v battery additionally?

Chykeman, I don't think HCHII repaired his DCDC converter. My understanding, and what I am trying to do, is to install the little alternator to keep the 12v battery charged, and in my case, also upgrade the 12vdc battery from the little thing thats in there.

I am tempted to try to mount it at the forward upper pulley location rather below that at the EGR pump location. For now we have not ordered the alternator, so no movement on that front. Also have an issue with the shifting (doesn't seem to change gears but also have not taken it on the highway). -SC

Well, I didn't mean he repaired his DC-DC converter, I'm looking for a way to repair mine, if possible.

On the alternator issue, I'm all in for practicable solutions. It will help solve A LOT of problems for guys that are running away from hybrids of this type.

An update. Thanks to HCHII2007, I've been able to modify my engine by adding an alternator in the same location as his. Unfortunately, I could not do it exactly like he did.

My car is somewhat slower in movement, anyway. The assist still works and my DCDC converter still works with the new arrangement. I wish I could do something to improve the cars responsiveness to acceleration especially when the IMA battery bars are depleted. Any suggestions are welcome

I just got screwed and bought a 2006 hybrid civic. The battery is not charging at all. It died on my way home from buying it and seller of course is ghosting me. Is what it is, I should have done my research. Bottom line, I’m like the alternator idea! HCHII2007 posts are removed so I’m lacking some info. It would be great if you could help walk me through some of this. I’m very mechanically inclined. I can probably figure this out, but my frustration from getting conned is overbearing my ability to think this out. Please I’m begging for a resolution to this.

Hello everyone. I also want to install an alternator because my battery is dead. I need a little help. The HCHII2007 referenced alternator has the wrong pulley. which pulley do I need to order for this alt? and can anyone describe the electrical connection in more detail?
and one more thing, i found this video were some guy installed alternator in the bottom of the engine. but as i understand this is possible because hi has no air conditioner in the car. am i wright?
