Subaru, Honda, Toyota, and even GM cars all tend to be good. Once you find the car you like use consumerguide car reviews to narrow it down. Some years of cars are better than other years.

The 02+ Nissan Altima 2.5 S would be a good choice. They 4 cylinder has the power of some 6 cylinders that I've driven and is very reliable.

What does he like in a car? 4 door, 2 door, little, big? If he's not into cars he could get a very new low miles American car for cheap. Or a basic 4 banger accord or something, but it'll be older.

If he dosen't care about cars there's no need in searching for an paying extra for a specialty type car like an Si or something with a V8 in it.
