all domestic car makers are gonna go out of business.
theres gonna be one domestic car manufacturer that will make just enough money to stay afloat but the rest of the market is gonna be dominated by foreign car companies.

i wouldnt be surprised if we see an uprising of European manufacturers taking advantage of this and selling their cars here in the states.

hooray for shipping more money and jobs overseas than we already too!!!!!! That's the perfect way to create a solid economy.
let me ask you this
do you drive a gm vehicle?
if yes, then go buy up all the gm vehicles and fix the economic crunch the big 3 are suffering from.
if not, then you should not be sarcastic to anyone for their .02

bottom line is gm failed because they were not smart enough to see what the economy wants in a car. if anyone is shipping jobs overseas its gm. its all their fault. honda and toyota did something about this economic hardship years ago. yes honda and toyota are sufffering too but not like the big 3. you have to ask yourself why that is. they just did their studying while gm was skipping class. i dont feel sorry for american car makers. i feel sorry for the workers that are losing their jobs. the big 3 should just pack it in. america doesnt want their overpriced, cheap quality, worst depreciating, unreliable cars. thats why we here drive hondas just like the rest of the world. name 1 gm car that can go 400k on the same motor and tranny and over 200k on the same clutch and still be worth more than the same year import. you cant. thats why the big 3 suffer now.
im so sick of gms whining about we need more $$. what the hell did they do with the bailout $$. i havent seen any improvement yet. they are just trying to buy time because they know its only a matter of time for them. i hope the government doesnt give them more $$. theres a saying. you made your bed, now ly down in it. its time for gm to go to sleep for eternity.

And here lies one of the other reasons why the big three are suffering - brand perception. Yes, America was turning out some pretty awful cars compared to the competition back in the '90s, I'll give you that. The problem is that the big three have caught up while the opinion of the general public has not.

Let's face it, the average car buyer isn't like you or me. They don't care about the driving experience or how well the car handles, most people just want to get from A to B. Cars like the Camry have become so popular because they excel at doing just this. And again, while the Camry was way ahead of what we were churning out 5 years ago, if you take an objective look at what the big three are building now we're a whole lot closer. Hell, go sit in a new Malibu, I think you'll be surprised at how nice the interior actually is and how well-built it feels.

On the flip side, our cars aren't cream of the crop either. The numerous transmission issues, DBW hang, rattles everywhere, really thin paint, misaligned body panels and overspray. Face it, Honda has been cutting corners and they can afford to do so - once again, due to the almighty brand perception. What I'm basically getting at here is that buyer perception is creating a much larger gap between domestic vs. foreign than there actually is. Marketing is a powerful tool, and the "domestic = crap, foreign = gold" mentality is so ingrained in the general public that the genuine improvements shown by the big three is too little, too late.

i cant wait for the big 3 to be a thing of the past
I hope you loose your job. or have fear of it and resort to drinking like I am right now...

Hope you guys know how many jobs at stake including mine. This has been ruining my life for awhile now.

goodness, all I can say is " NO MORE BAILOUT! ", the poor are suffering.
tell that to the 3,500 workers that are getting laid off despite the new LOAN. Men and women with families to feed.

We make 6 percent less than any other toyota or Honda employee...we took a 10 percent pay cut on top of that as well. White collard workers are hurting more than anyone.

there's not much the peoples who will lose their job can do beside go look for another job just like everyone else. i'm sorry but that is just the way it is, right now at my work place, they are laying workers off too, so i'm just sitting back to see what fate have in store for me.

I was getting mad when I read about GM asking for more money from the gornment.
I know that the company needs money to operate, but it's unacceptable to go to the government everytime they're in a pinch. What's the worst is that "you give us the loan, or we'll file bankrupt". With that kind of mentality of course you're going to go bankrupt!
I'd say it's time to fire the CEOs and CFOs and get someone other people that know what they are doing to turn the company around.

There are so many things that could help other than giving them money every time they are broke.

GM has known about its financial situation for a long time. They did nothing substantive to prepare for a downturn. It makes me sick to see the taxpayers bailing them out (some of whom just got laid off). It's insulting.

Instead of proping up dead and dying companies, maybe the gov't should make loans available to companies who can expand and produce something people would want to buy.

Honestly, GM cars are so cheap right now, but who wants to buy a car from a company that might be gone in a year?

My friend with a Saturn is screwed after 2011 as Saturn will be gone. Saab is going to be the same thing.

I understand the idea of keeping these companies afloat, but seriously the whole point of capitalism is that running a company requires competence and when that fails, so does the biz. Otherwise, you destroy the whole system (and you pay for it on the backs of the workers).

++ btw, i'm really sorry for the guy who lost his job. By far the best thing that can happen now would be for the economy to take surprise upturn and get us out of this mess. If it keeps going down, then a LOT of us are going to be out of work and screwed - while the bank and auto CEOs are cashing their checks of recently minted money.

Uhmmmm...........starting at $28 an hour with awesome benefits, unions wanting even more even though the companies are crumbling makes it hard for me to feel sorry for the workers.

My friend works at the GM plant in Oshawa and he tells me I should feel sorry for no one there, they dug their own grave. For years they took advantage of having a large and strong union and now they are paying the price, its not like they don't play a part in all of this. One of his electricians makes $45 an hour to sit on a chair and once a week an alarm goes off. His job is to hit the reset button and then sit back down again.
