Howdy all,

My buddy has a '97 Maxima (M/T) that is just about to clear the 200k mile mark. Now, normally I would say that it could go much longer. But that is not the case here. The thing has had so many problems recently and hes getting tired of fixing it. So, hes looking into getting a new (or slightly used) car.

Hes only just begun to look, but right now... his choices are an 8th gen civic, or a Scion tC. No matter what he gets... it will be M/T and his only requirements (as of now) are that it gets good gas mileage (he has a 45 min commute every day to work) and that it can handle well in bad weather.

Now, Im obviously partial to the Civic, as Im sure many of you are... but can anyone here provide any knowledge and or experience, pros/cons in getting a Civic vs a tC or vice versa? Im sure theres got to be some people that have driven or owned a tC, or know someone who has/had one.

Thanks guys/gals :thumb:

Tc!!!!

jk...I would go with the civic, but it all depends on what they like. I don't like the overall look of the Tc's, and that pretty much kills any hope it has IMO. I have heard that they aren't that bad of a car though, and they do hold their value better than average.

I used to like the look, but something about it just doesnt do it for me anymore. Its like it looks to squished.

I actually test drove one before I got my civic. I was between the tC, Civic and RSX... ended up getting the Civic because of $$ at the time of purchase and I liked it better than the tC.

Anyways, when i drove the tC, i felt that there was an absurd amount of road/engine noise... and I hated that. I told him about this, but he said he didnt remember that from when he test drove a tC... but that was like 2 years ago, so who knows.

Thanks for the opinions so far, keep 'em comin :thumb:

ok well i have an 07 SI sedan and my brother has a 06 tc so i've spent lots of time in the tc and i mean lots of driving time.

on gas mileage.. tc gets as much as the Si ........... tc 23/30 Si 23/32 and civic lx/ex 30/38
(07 numbers) so as a commuter the reg civic owns the tc, even the Si gets better mileage so...

power wise, the mt tc will own a regular civic but is not as fast as the Si for sure.. those numbers are tc 160hp 163 lb tq reg civic 140hp 128 lb tq and Si 197 hp 139 lb tq

build wise, i have not been inside of a reg civic for long and have not had a chance to drive it so i cant help so much there but from what i have seen the interior build quality is superior over the tc. tc's clutch pedal is very stiff, (could bee due to my brothers mileage about 40k) which means tiresome in traffic driving. and shifter is long in comparison to the Si.. like i said i don't know how the reg civic is and i wouldn't doubt its the same length. shift action is not bad, its smooth, i believe it could be a bit more solid but a light soft shifter is not bad for daily commuting.

in summary for the same price as a reg civic the mt tc is much quicker and feels a lot more powerful with 163 lb tq, something our Si's don't even have. but its gets as much mpg as the Si. so
tc power wise BIG TIME reg civic mpg BIG TIME and i would have to say reg civic for reliability / build quality from what i've seen

civic FTW reason being i work at a toyota dealership and i drive the tc a lot and granted its a nice car but it doesnt do well in wet conditions in my opinion and plus civics look better:thumb:
Tell your friend to hurry up and buy it before end of the year. this is the perfect time to buy a car. My cousin just got his EX for invoice price.
Im sending these quotes to him right now, lol.

Also, I was at the Toyota dealership the other day, and the guy said that the price on the TC's sticker IS THE PRICE. There is no negotiation what soever, he even went so far as to say employees don't even get discounts on Scions.

the other day i was at a Toyota dealership where my friend works...went by to scoop him up after work. he had no ride. anyhoo parked my si on the visitors side. the salesman comes up and ask if i was looking forward to getting a scion/toyota. I said no i use to own one. (tC i traded for the si) he oh i thought you were going to trade that civic..for a scion..he was fascinated at the sI. As i was waiting for my friend a customer who was roaming the lot saw my car and ask the salesman for a test drive. the salesmans advised that that "honda" doesnt belong in thier lot. that customer seem real interested in the Si and left to a honda dealership nearby...he was looking at a tc at retail on the lot for 26k no joke. with 18's, navi, and vinyl..doest even include the lip kit...geez 26k for a tC!

but yeah im banned from that dealership
