As far as I've read, there are only two states where radar/laser detectors are illegal. Now radar and laser jammers are illegal in most states or requires some kind of license due to FCC regulations. You are broadcasting a radio frequency to cancel another (radar). The best mounting location is a big discussion topic and a lot of sites go either way. Some say midway is better. Who wants to do that? Being higher gets stray signals when you crest a bridge or hill. They say lower on the shield will catch the signal closer to their aiming point. Like the OP said, by then it's too late.

Anyway, I went semi-permanent on my install. I mounted mine high on the right side of the rearview and ran the wires along the A-pillar, under the glove box and into the power socket. I do have a Cobra XRS R-7 with the remote display. Yeah it's a Cobra but so far it has detected 8 out of 8 patrols running radar. I will never trust it 100% but then of course you should never trust a radar detector 100%. Never ever get too comfortable with it and always keep your situational awareness about you. The other option is to not speed at all.

Hey guys i love all your DIY guides but I messed up on this one please help.

I have set everything up it all looks well except i made one minor (or maybe major) mistake during the installation. When i was tucking the wires under the roof i was using a flat tip screw driver (bad idea i know realize) and scratched the solid black part of the dot matrix. Is there a way to cover up/fix this?

P.S. If you are new at this kind of stuff like me make sure and use plastic/rubber tools so you dont scratch anything.

Thank you!

I understand this is old, I apologize for bringing up an old thread, but I have a question. When you spliced the wires what kind of wire did you run down the A pillar? Did you just put the fuse over the wire and push it in? Or was there a connector of some sort? Thanks..

Here's my solution

This is my mount in 08 civic coupe. A little foam coverd with felt on sides and a piece of window weather stripping arround the antenna front. Has a little felt shade to block above visual detection.

hey sorry to bring up an old thread. but i was wondering if this location of my radar is okay? or should i move it lower?

i know i should get rid of the cobra and get a passport lol but i hardly ever speed and i just wanted it to give a lil heads up when on the highway when to roll down my windows because of the tint.

I think it should be in the middle because if its there i think it block more view on the passenger side.

I have an Escort 8500 x50. I'm looking to hard wire it like in the DIY here. Would this be the wire that would allow me to do this in the 8th gen civ. It says it is 8ft long, long enough? Also it comes with either a t-tap plug, a fuse tap or a blade fuse tap. Which would be the easiest and smartest way to go? I'm looking to keep everything looking like it belongs, I don't want a shamed fuse box. Also it would be nice not to have to splice into a wire that way my dealership can not blame any electrical problems on the splice, cause with my luck they would. Thanks

...why the heck dont you guys just mount it right above your speedometer or some other low point on your windshield? Why does it need to be mounted in Alaska and have to worry about running wires everywhere?? ...I can't believe there is a DIY on this... I just got dumber.
