Took to my car in for the "B Service" today. Said I need new brakes and rotors, which is strange, cause the brakes have always been really good.. No vibrations or anything. Never a problem stopping, the pedal doesn't even go down very far to stop the car. Anyways.. Cause I pay a monthly fee, it would waive the labor involved. So I only pay for parts. They said for brakes/rotors it would cost me $360 CAN. I thought this was pretty high just for parts, am I wrong?

it's a 2006 Civic LX.. Just hit the 100,000KM mark on it.. Besides the brake pads/rotors, I need an alignment done, rear sway bar bushings done (warranty, whew) and 2 new tires. Grand total was a little over $600.. Plus the $150 I spent today. Ouch :/

When was the last time you replaced your pads and had an alignment done?

Also when's the last time you got new tires put on?

see, I don't know.. I bought the car used at this dealership in Nov, 2008. 6 months ago I took it in for inspection, everything was fine then. Now all of a sudden it needs all this work.. Just seems strange.

How many miles have you put on it since your inspection?

Do you have the maintenance records from the previous owner?

It's really hard to tell if they're just taking you for a ride without knowing the specifics. If you really want a second opinion, you could try taking it to another shop and getting their opinion.

I mean, if you really aren't experiencing any vibrations in stopping, you may just need new brake pads. I'd pick up speed (highway speed) and do a quick panic stop and see if you feel any sorta weird vibration.

I tried the panic stop today. The car came to a stop very quickly. There was no vibrations or anything at all out of the ordinary. Just a nice, smooth, hard stop. They didn't give me any service records when I bought the car. They did say it was Honda Used certified, and they checked/replaced a bunch of stuff. The car hasn't been driven much at all since the inspection, just to work and back mostly, and that's highway driving. I think I will take it to another shop and get a 2nd opinion. I'm ok with replacing the pads, but I really think the rotors are fine.

Yeah it sounds like the rotors are just fine.

Well in Oakland where there's like 5-ft wide potholes, it's almost inevitable, lol.

Oh and every time I tell them I had an alignment recently, they conveniently forget and tell me I need another one. Needless to say I avoid dealers altogether =)

As far as i can tally the parts should have cost just over $450 CAD (Max $200 for each tire 17" all seasons and about 20 to 30 for the bushings), and alignment is pretty standard fare about $100 CAD. $15-$25 each tire for mounting. So the price isn't THAT terrible. But it was very simple jobs that could have been DIY.

I normally don't do an alignment unless i haven't had one in forever (6+ years), or i changed my suspension parts. Rear sway bushings, and new tires doesn't cut it as an excuse to do an alignment.

I replaced all my rotors and pads for $500 (upgraded to slotted cryo treated, and hawk HPS, DOT 4 ATE super blue fluid). Parts alone cost me $500 and i got it on a deal too, I did the labour.

The only reason to replace, if no warpage. Is that the rotors are worn down to the wear bars.

The $360 they quoted me was just for the pads and rotors. :( Not including labour. Just seems really high.

That is low.

Assuming you need all rotors and all pads.

rotors are 100-150 each, and pads are 80 for a set.

so thats around $600 and rear sway bar links are 70-150

Like said before if the rotors dont meet the minimum spec to be machined (19mm) then you will need new rotors.

And it is recommended to do an alignment after installing new tires. But not necessary

just do the brakes yourself its pretty easy if u know a little about cars, but the front pads would need to be replaced at about 50k miles and the rule of thumb is the back pads/shoes get replaced once for every 2 front pad replacement... thats just a guideline but no way in hell would i pay $600 to get all that done. pads are not that expensive and each rotor to get machined is $10 at a parts store or auto garage.... just my opinion on everything
