I've read this quite a few times just to see the bickering about whether this should it shouldnt be done and why...

I came to the conclusion that all the "what ifs" are effing dumb. In America, you need to press the clutch pedal to start a car. Why would anyone accidentally start somebody else's car by just turning the key? That's never going to happen. Who goes "I need to push the clutch in first to start this car I don't own so let me NOT do that and just give the key a turn so nothing happens"? I'll tell you who - NOBODY. If anyone takes the key to somebody elses standard car and tries to start it, they'll either push the clutch in first like normal, or wonder what to do with the stick shift and ask first, or they'll press the brake pedal first like an automatic, then turn the key and hope for the best.
