It's that time of year for all the end of year awards and top ten lists to surface, but Ward's always brings something different to the table. Rather than pick out the best car or truck that was new this year, the automotive trade journal picks the ten best engines, and this year it focused on motors that manage to balance the competing demands of more power and more fuel economy.

Click the name of any engine below to view, or tour the Ten Best Engines list in our gallery.

The real question is whether or not you think Ward's got its "Ten Best Engines" list right? What engines are missing, or more importantly, which ones don't deserve to be included? You can read our opinion after the jump and leave your own in the comments.

i thought it was interesting that four of the motors were turbocharged, and relatively unproven as far as any sort of reliability

oh noes the my car is yet again not in a list. im gonna go cry myself to sleep.

the si is in a niche market, especially the engine..these generally dont win award year after year, generally only the first few they are out, if that..take a look at the BMW S85, which won like 5 awards its first year then less the next year and now no one talks about it anymore..on the other hand, the N54 would probably be talked about for a while.. as mr. bill kindly stated the F20, F22 and K20 have won before and thats more than good enough for me.

Wonder why the Insight hybrid motor didn't win or the r18? Both had major advances in technology and engine design.

R18 placed seventh for New Engines in the 2006 IEOTY (International Engine of the Year) awards.

When the R18 came out, Ward's changed the weighting to reward forced induction and direct injection gasoline engines - the R18 is neither.
