Advan Gold RCII's (now with pics!)

I just bought a set of Advan RCII's (18x8.5 +31 offset) for my 2007 DXG Coupe, on Pirelli PZero Nero's (Not too sure about the size). I'm currently on stock suspension, and had the Advan's mounted today.

They're absolutely beautiful (will post pictures later), but the problem is.. there's less than 2 inches clearance from the car to the tires, and it does indeed (slightly) rub if making complete right/left turns quickly. Taking the car on the highway, there's a noticeable vibration from the steering wheel (something that never happened on my old 15" steelies). As well, it seems like the car can barely hit 100 without feeling unsafe (hard to control) on the highway.

What can I do to fix this, and is this a huge problem?

Edit: Pics as promised! :)

I had it done at a Certigard, so wouldn't any improper balancing/etc be covered under their service warranty?

Aside from the vibration from driving fast, what about the clearance issues? Does anyone have anything to say in regards to the offset/sizes and a DXG stock coupe? They rub slightly when making quick full turns.. what can I do to fix this?

Vibration is "probably" caused by the rim not being hub-centric, ... you should add hub-centric rings to the rims to properly center itself on the hub.

But it could also be caused by poor wheel balancing, or a Tire that is out of round. (most likely hub-centric issues)

As for the rubbing ...what size Tires?

I assume from the offset 31mm that you are rubbing on the fender ?

Even with a 8.5" rim, 31mm is very "out" ... you generally need to run about a 38mm offset to fit a 8.5" rim on the Si's

There is no easy way to fix this ... other than machining the hub by 4+ mm (removing 4-5 mm of metal) ASSUMING there is enough meat on the back of the rim to safely allow this.

You are probably better off selling these off (They are really a Import RWD fitment) and buying a proper offset rim for the car.

Hub-centric rings?

I'll get back on the tire size, but it's most likely the offset.

I've heard about rolling fenders.. would that work in my situation - or is machining the hub the only solution? Is the rubbing a really big issue though? How dangerous is it?

Hub-Centric Rings:
There is a lip on the hub of all Honda's (and most other cars) that an OE rim seats against PROPERLY centering the rim against the hub. (The Wheel lugs do NOT center the rim properly) Aftermarket rims normally come with an oversized hub "hole" that you insert an adaptor "hub-centric ring" that sizes the rim to match the hub of the car you are installing the rims on. This allows the aftermarket rim to be properly centered and balanced. You need to know the hub-bore of the rim (OD and the Honda Bore (ID) and then order the specifc centering rings.

Rolling fenders:
Yes that can work assuming the rub is minor and there is no chance of major tire/fender contact at full suspension compression / wheel turn.

Danger:
Depends how bad the rub is ... you could potentially cut the tire on a high speed corner, and have a catstophic blow-out ...that would be VERY bad. Also if the Rubber contacts the suspension or body under corners it can "grab" or "brake" that wheel causing you to loose control ...that also would be bad

Based on your offset (31) you will proably have problems that can only be solved by machineing

There is another issue with these low offsets ... they add to increased bearing and bushing wear.

FYI - "Cheap thrills" in Milton has a wheel lathe and "TireMAg" in Vaughn/Concorde used to be able to machine Rims ..I do not know if they do any more.

Does machining the rims harm the structural integrity of the rims? How much am I looking at for a complete set to be machined?

Strangely, I took the old stockies out of the trunk/backseat.. and my drive today was a vast improvement.. it doesn't seem to rub anymore, and there is little vibration!

where r the pix?????
Tomorrow night, as soon as I wash + wax the car (which I was told that I wouldn't need to by the stealership.. as I paid for the pearl coating :sadwavy:).

Vibration is coming from not having hub-centric rings.

Machining rims can harm the structural integrity of the wheel. At most you can only do maybe 5mm, and your wheels might rub even then, depending on tire size. If it still rubs after that you might need to take another step of adding more negative camber.

Although you stopped rubbing because you've taken the stockies out, as soon as you hit a corner hard you will rub (weight transfer). Or if you ride with 2-3 other ppl you'll see it rub a lot again.

I hate to be a nay-sayer here, but I think that you didn't do your research before buying these rims.

18"x8.5" +31 offset!?

On a Civic!?

Aki is completely correct in his statements. Just know that when/if you add negative camber your car might not handle the way you want it to anymore and you will wear your rubber fast if you go too aggressive with the camber adjustment.

Advans are sick, but I think that you just made a $2k+ bad investment... sorry.

PS: forget about a lowered suspension set up now...

You're absolutely right. I was concerned mostly about the styling of these, as well as an really attractive price - and sorta got carried away, leaving no space for research.

Could some one shed light on what adding negative camber is?

Insult to injury... nice...

I would agree, but I didn't want to say anything since the sting of being out $2k+ has to be bad enough... oh well.
I said sorry! Really though, I posted up like 2-3 different threads double and triple checking my wheels would fit my car before I bought and they were under $500 shipped :xyxnervou

It sucks that he's out the money, but he'll prolly lose less than 3-400 on them. Sometimes things like this need to happen to learn a lesson
