Quick question about my recently purchased Civic. When I lock my car and get the lovely little “beep” from the horn I am assuming the security system has engaged. My question is how can I test this to make sure it’s actually working. I’ve tried rocking the car and opening the door but I can’t seem to get any response. I don’t live in a bad area or anything but for my piece of mind I would like to know it goes off.

I had the same question for Honda when I got mine. What I was told is that the car does not arm right away. After the beep you have to wait a "minute" before you attempt to open the door. It will go off. The also knows if something is still open. It will locked the doors but not beep. Like a door, trunk or hood not being completely latched. Also, as far as I know rocking will not set of the alarm. I think that the trigger is the latches so nothing else is going to set it off.

Having said this, I have had mine broken into but not stolen and that damn alarm did not go off

Yeah I guess I will have to try it again. But if it goes off the latch then I'm pretty sure it isn't working the way they intended.

Yeah there’s a light flashing on the speedometer tach. I also just tested it out. Never thought about trying it with the window down. Rolled the window down then locked the car. As soon as I reached in and unlocked the car the alarm went off.

I think you might have too high of an expectation of the factory alarm. Think of it this way, anything that would turn on the dome light is going to set off the alarm and but nothing else will. The only excepting is that included the latches on the hood and trunk in the alarm. If you are wanting something more secure you will have to go aftermarket

Its not really an expectation more then just curiosity. This is only my second car to come with a factory navigation and I wasn’t worried about anybody messing with my last car. The whole thought that I need to check it’s functionality is after I was followed home by some sketchy looking people.(obviously I didn’t go straight home until I lost them)
