'02 Civic Si... six speed?

I just bought my son an '02 Si for Christmas. It's his dream car. He doesn't know yet... He's not getting it until Christmas morning.
I bought the car from a wholesaler that advertises on Autotrader.com. When I went to look at the car I could tell that it had been hit in the front. Someone replaced both front fenders with ones that have vents on the side. I figure that's a modification that he'll really like! There were other signs that it had been in an accident as well. But since it drove very well, looked really clean, and was bargain priced at $5995, I bought the car. The only thing I could find wrong with the car is that is seems like the sync may be going out because it makes a slight grinding noise when you shift into 6th gear. That's right... SIXTH GEAR! I came home and started reading all the reviews for the car and they were all 'glowing' just as I had expected. But it occured to me that they all mentioned a 5-speed transmission. Thinking it may have been an option, I did somo more research. Nope... not an option. Something isn't right. The motor is the 2.0, but I'm just not sure it's the right 2.0. How can I tell what the motor and transmission came out of?
Also, There is a couple of little things the car needs. It's missing the Si badge on the front grille, the V-TEC emblems on the side (since it has been repainted), and the motor cover that says v-tec. Any idea where is the best place to find these things, other than ebay? I've looked on ebay and can't find any of them except the side decals.

Thanks,

Maury

Ill check it out.
Can I make a suggestion that will make you the best dad out there (you're already well on your way) and help to keep your son from becoming a statistic?

*preach on*

Too many times we see young kids getting hot little cars ang getting into the wrong scene or getting in way over their heads. Now for all we know your kid may already be a karting champion since he was 6 and a better driver than any of us! But if he's not, please sign him (and maybe yourself) up for some driving courses. I'm way up here in Canada so I can't suggest anything local but I'm sure the local SCCA clubs have tons of schools and things that you guys can get into.

I've taught at plenty of autocross schools in my area and there are plenty of fathers getting their sons off on the right foot by bringing them out as soon as they get their licenses to Autocross schools and then to autocross events (and quite often due to youth, exhuberence and something I call the "notmycarfactor" they're posting faster times than dad within a few events!) This can go very far for the male bonding experience as well as giving you the piece of mind in knowing that your son will have the know how (as well as discipline) to handle any situation that arises when he's driving on the street.

*preach off*

cool car btw, my dad never bought me anything that nice!

take him to the track, that will help keep him off the street.
wow...a k24/20 frank...all the revs and the torque too

nice find....lucky kid

make sure he knows to be responsible, that is a lot of power for a novice driver
great job dad! :thumb:

found a swapped ep3 from a dealer lol how lucky is that haha
ok, now use youtube to show us some acceleration videos :) :thumb:
Wow... I wish I stumpled onto a swap like that for $6K, lol.

Nice find! (you might want to make sure the airbags are functional since it was in a collision...)
to the op...after all day consideration,
I'm starting to think this is to good to be true... I would take it to an expert to make sure everything is up and up...

K24/K20s frankenstein Ep3 for $6k...I bet the suspension is f'd up from the accident, is it a standard or salvage title...

K-Frankenstein hatches of the EG (92-95) variety are going for $8k and that shell is 10 years older than what you got...

something's wrong..

I thought the same thing...but is possible that the dealer simply did not know what they had

Exactly. When dealers wholesale their trade-ins, a lot of the time they have no clue what they're sitting on.

I would give a thourough test drive before handing over the keys, but I wouldn't be skeptical about the deal. Dealers don't care enough to check out all the trade-ins. If the salesman saw a honda engine under the hood he wouldn't give it a 2nd thought...

I'm thinkin would you buy a $17k car, roughly $10k on mods and sell it for pennies...you know the dealer has mark up on it as well,

So this guy took $4500K (estimate) on trade for a $25k+ car

it's a $25k car based on what? you don't know what engine that is and the condition of the car. Also it's based on the assumption this car was never in an accident. If it's running well and conditions good, then it's definitely a steal.

That's one awesome f*ckin present. the fenders are hideous though.
lol that is not a $25k car...because it may be worth more to the tuner community does not make the car expensive. Look at the KBB on that car. Is is a rebuilt title, I dont know, but that could be another tell tale sign of less worth. Not to mention, mods. When you mod a car is loses value, it does not gain it. Even if there are $10k in mods, that does not equate to a $10k increase in value. More then likely it is rebuilt with a swap. Not worth as much as you think. And if the dealer had no idea what they had they could easily have let it go for that price.
