Ok ladies and gents. The moment you all (Dx and Lx owners) have been waiting for. I was getting tired of the drum brakes on the rear of my car and decided to do a conversion to disc's. This is not a hard task but is time consuming. I was told my e-brake cables and and solid brake lines (pipes as honda calls them that hook into the drum cylinders from my drum brake set-up)would work with the conversion. WRONG. LOL so I had to do some ordering from Honda. All in all the whole conversion cost me about $220 bux. And they work great. P.S.- OP can in no way be held responsible for any problems or accidents caused by this step by step.Anyways here we go:
Everything you will need:
-disc brake knuckle with the disc brake set-up attached (donor car-Ex or Si)
-E-brake cables from the donor car or order through Honda( Ex or Si)
-rubberbrake lines from donor car or from Honda (Ex or Si)
-brake fluid (dot 3 or equivelent) got mine from honda.
-set of metric wrenches and metric sockets with ratchet.
-patience lol
1.)Make sure you have a clean safe level place to work. Chok your wheels in the front of your car as your e-brake must not be engaged. Lift up the rear of the car and pull your rear wheels off. Make sure you are using jack stands! You will now see your drums in front of you. They should spin freely. If not dis-engage your e-brake.
2.)Start by pulling the drums off the hub. Do not inhale or ingest the brake dust. Very harmful. You will now see all the components of the drums. Remove the drum hardware. I found you must remove the hardware to disconnect the e-brake. Place the hardware in the drums and out of the way. Drop the e-brake cable down.
3.)Diconnect the ABS sensor and snap it out of its bracket as well. You will be able to use your sensor. No modding necessary. Also diconnect the brake line from the inner fender and the main brake line. (same place)
(this is my abs sensor on the disc brakes I am running. I used it from the drum set up so I didnt mod it!)
4.)You will now see the knuckle behind the drum backing. It is bolted in at the upper control arm (1 bolt) and lower control arm (2 bolts). Remove these bolts. As soon as these are removed the the whole assembly should be able to slide out.
**intermission** get something to eat :wheee:
5.)Slide your knuckle assembly withe disc brakes already assembled into the control arms in reverse of the way you took it off. Replace the bolts making sure they are facing the same way when you took them off. Tighten them down.
6.)Take the brake lines you have from the Ex or Si. Very important. You cannot use the solid lines from your drums. I learned this the hard way. Thats why it took like 2 weeks to do my conversion. Waiting on honda for parts. Anyways bolt it up to the inner fender and the main brake line. DO NOT CROSS THREAD THE BRAKE LINE. You will end up with a nightmare. Run the mid point of the brake hose to the bracket on the back of the knuckle. Its a black bracket with a half circle that shoulda came with the disc brake setup. Bolt up the line there. Run the end up to the caliper. Bolt that in with the brake line bolt. The bolt has 2 holes in it with a hollow center with the crush washers. It goes bolt, crush washer, brake hose, crush washer, and finally caliper in that order. Your brake lines are now run. Take this time to insert your ABS sensor and bolt it in. Place the rubber piece of the ABS line in the bracket.
7.)Now that all that is outta the way you must remove your olde-brake cables. To do this there are 4 bolts on each side if I remember correctly that hold the brake cables in. You need to remove all the bolt that hold the e-brake cables in. Once you have done this you need to get in the car and remove your center console. I think there is a DIY on removing the center console. Your e-brake cables connect under the console. Once you have removed the console pull on your cables to give them slack and remove them from the equalizer. After they are removed from the equalizer pull them out from under the car. Replace the cables with the ones from the Ex or Si. Run them from the rear to the front. Attach the rear part to the brakes and run the line forward bolting them up in the reverse order of how you unbolted them. Poke them through the floor and attach them to the equalizer.
8.)Replace your center console. The donor car I got my conversion from only had 10,000 miles and I bought the cables new so I didnt need to adjust the parking brake.
9.)At this point you can bleed your brakes without the wheels on the rear of the car. No matter what anyone says here my dad and I did the old 1 pump 1 bleed routine. You dont need a machine. It worked fine. I didnt even gravity bleed either. I have a great pedal too.
10.)You can take this time to paint the calipers if you want. After that replace your wheels and put the car back on the ground. Test drive the car slowly and make sure the brakes are working fine. Test out your e-brake as well. I lowered my car a long time ago so I needed an alignment after the conversion. My toe in/out was off by like 2 inches they said lol.
I will add pictures when I get a chance and I worded this the best I could. I hope this helps someone out there. Have fun and remember to have patience. Take care!
