How to keep parked car cool

Does anyone know any tricks to keep your car cool on a scorching summer day when you have to park in the sun? Often you can't crack the window open because it might rain. Does leaving the sunroof folded up keep the rain out if it's not too windy? A sun visor is certainly one way.

There isn't much you can do. All I do is get in the car, open all the windows and wait till all the hot air gets out while I drive away... I also turn the A/C on. It gets cooler after a minute or so...

I saw a commercial for these one day and didn't think anyone would be stupid enough to buy it. Sure enough, a few days ago I saw someone driving around with one...I felt like running over them

rofl sometimes I can't even touch my shift knob cuz it's so hot, that's when I throw out my hot hand shifting skills.

I try to park in the shade as often as possible because I don't like leaving my car baking in the sun, sometimes I leave my windows open a crack.

Thanks for the tips. That solar-powered fan is a big disappointment according to the Amazon user reviews (especially if you have tinted windows). The two products mentioned by michaelbgone above look great for the task and I aim to buy them....if my Civic ever arrives.

The solar-powered fan is crap. My friend has one in her Corolla. Park near a tree (not necessarily under it and get all the sap depending on the kinda of tree), crack your windows and put up sunshades/visors on all the windows. Also note, having a car cover does not keep your car any cooler. It actually helped my car retain heat cuz the hot hair couldn't get out of my interior.

It works for me. It may not let the air out, but it doesnt have to since the sun is what makes the car hot and the sun is blocked by the cover.

I keep the sunroof open from the back with the cloth piece closed with about an inch gap, windows cracked with weathertech visors, sunshield, and window tint....doesn't get hot at all...a little warm is all...this is how my car sits all day while I'm working

I have a sunshield and leave my windows cracked about 1.5 inches. If it rains, I go out and roll the windows up.

I also use an iPod sock on the shift knob - That keeps it nice and cool and it looks like it's wearing a beanie cap.

Get these and you won't have to worry about leaving your windows open in the rain:

I have a set of the dark tinted onesfor a Coupe that I'll sell for $25 if you're interested.

maybe it's cuz i had a cheapo tan cloth one from Kmart. where do you live? i'm out in SoCal and had the car cover on when it was mid 90's weather outside. i checked my temp gauge and it said ~103'ish! =O never again did i use the car cover.

how's the window noise with those things? i've been looking to get a pair but haven't ran into anybody that could give me feedback on them. hit me up with a PM. those definitely help to keep rain out if your afraid of leaving the windows cracked.

I've had the weathertechs for about a month now. It's great to go out to a relatively cool car and nice to not have to keep up with local radar.
There is a small increase in wind noise with these visors, however it is IMO well worth the payback on these hot days. They look great and fit perfectly.

Buckminster 08-28-2006 02:47 PM

It sounds as if you leave those WeatherTechs on permanently. Do you think they could be easily removed and reapplied on a daily (if not weekly) basis?
