Cleaning the Engine Bay

Hey all, just got my Civic Si like 2 weeks ago.

I was wondering how I clean the engine bay up. A lot of the metal parts has oxidation on it. I can post pics later today to show more detail.

Cover up the electrical components, spray simple green engine bay cleaner, let it sit, hose down. Done.

It would get rig of the oil/dirt. But not sure about the oxidation you are referring to.

All of the above, plus you can get a sink brush or wheel brush and some soapy water and get into all the hard to reach areas.

For the most part, everything under the hood is water proof, but never put the stream directly on electronic components.

+1 for simple green. One thing I would recommend to dilute the simple green with some water. Full strength this stuff is pretty could potentially hurt aluminum. Just spray on and lightly agitate as needed and rinse thoroughly.

I cleaned my engine bay with goof off last summer when it was stock. It took most of the dirt off and some of the oxidation off. I want to do clean my engine bay again this summer, but how do I go about doing this with a SRI on the car? should I take it off or cover it with a plastic bag?

Why does the SRI worry you?

I mean, I wouldn't suggest taking the filter off and blasting water up into your engine. But short of doung something stupid like that, what are you worried about?

I'm just afraid that once I start hosing the engine with water, some might go in the SRI tube through the filter and into the engine

So? What would be so bad about a few drops of water?

Wouldnt this be the equivalent of a CAI going through a puddle of water and hydro locking the engine?

Simply put, the people that claim that they drove through a tiny puddle that splashed up and hydrolocked their motor are full of ****, and just don't want to admit what they really did.

You need a substantial amount of water. Way, way more than is possible with a little spray.

the heat from the engine will most likely evaporate the water before it even gets into the cylinders. if your really worried about it take off the filter and stuff a rag inside of the SRI.

though hydrolock is a real fear, for once I will agree with testify in that it requires a substantial amount of water to actually hydrolock it.. (extremely rare that you hit a small puddle and hydrolock) they would prob have to be going pretty fast at WOT to hydrolock without submersing the CAI filter into water, or the puddle was much bigger than led on to be..

I do understnad your concern though so I will offer you this advice, either use gallon zip lock backs, or grocery bags to cover the air filter and alternator to protect them while you clean the bay..

I will agree you should dilute the simple green with water, as its pretty harsh stuff in its pure form. Gently rub everything down once coated with simple green, than rinse with the hose...

Ripply, believe it or not, your motor will ne fine.

I've heen power washing bays at 3500psi for decades without covering or protecting anything, and have never had a single issue.

Just put a bag over your alternator and your cone filter (if equipped). Spray the mother loving hell out of the engine bay with some Simple Green, or any other good degreaser. Use a good pressure washer. Get all up in there, tickle it's insidey bits.

I like to use a wet/dry vac on the blow function to blow dry the engine bay afterwards, and then wipe it down with some dressing. I'm super anal about nice clean engine bays you could eat out of.

I work as a detailer. I do this stuff every day with no issues.
