Trunk rust - public service announcement

Even if you don't think your trunk has started to rust yet, it probably has if you have an '09-'11 FA5. I got mine in April of 2011, end of the '11 model year (last one that dealer had before getting their shipment of '12s in fact). When I heard about the trunk extended warranty I figured prevention is better than trusting the cure later, so I ordered the black plastic piece from an '08 (figuring it would match the Si's black grille, and no chrome would = preventing rust).

When I pulled off the chrome to replace it I found this:

And on the chrome piece itself:

2011 dyno blue sedan, 12k miles
On the road 25 months almost to the day
Waxed 2x a year (spring and fall)

So, the moral of the story - no matter how much you baby your FA5 it may already be rusting under the chrome piece on your trunk!

Just for a bit of eye candy, a photoshop mockup of a dyno with the black piece from an '08:

wow, I never understood that chrome piece addition on the 09s. it just looked like an ugly after thought to me, and to find out that not only is it not pretty, but it also causes rust? sucks. replace with 06-08 painted piece.

There's a factory extended warranty on it (7 years) that Honda sent out recently. They say road salt + dissimilar metals (trunk vs chrome) = chemical reaction that causes the rust.

I have a few minutes before an appointment this morning so I'll be bringing mine to Mohawk Honda in Scotia for inspection and pictures. I'll report back when I know more, like how long it'll take Honda US to make a decision.

Ok, that was completely painless. I just stopped into Mohawk and their body shop manager took a look at the trunk, said she's 99% sure they'll cover it, and snapped a few pictures. She even took a look at the hood and said they'd touch up a few rock chips for me while it's in.

She's submitting the pictures to their rep and should hear back today and will schedule me sometime next weeks courtesy car and everything.

Honestly I've taken longer to drop the car off for an oil change. Honda's reputation for reliability is legendary but the stories I've heard about this dealer (all of which I've found to be true so far) were a big factor in buying my Hondas. My '03 CRV has given me fewer problems than an '07 Camry I bought from a Toyota dealer in '08 that never should have been certified (major accident, which they lied about and showed me a fake carfax). I didn't find out until I got sick of the issues and traded it in to Mohawk for my Si.

Guess it's true what they say, finding a good dealer is half the battle. With the right dealer even a Volkswagen without a warranty can be a good car...

Have not taken my trim off but I noticed that there is a plastic/rubber strip (that has started peeling) running along the sides and bottom corner of the chrome piece. Can't tell from any of the pictures, but do you still have this on your chrome trim?

Does anyone have any experience with having their trim replaced with a painted piece? I haven't taken my trim off to look yet, but I'm curious if this would be an option if I found any rust.

Pepperdanky - yes, my chrome trim has a the insulation strip on it. Slightly different design than the 08 plastic though.

Nitro turtle - the explanation given by Honda is the dissimilar metals in the trunk and the chrome create a chemical reaction causing the rust. If this explanation is true (and I have no reason to believe it's not), removing one of the metals should halt the reaction. That was my theory when I bought the black plastic. I found the rust when I went to install it. However I can't imagine it would stop rust already in progress, any time moisture gets in there it would make the problem worse.

Danny32 - the warranty is straight from Honda. I don't believe where you bought it is a factor because it's 7 years, unlimited miles.

Brian1 - my reaction was the same as yours. I pretty much baby my FA5. I drove my CRV this winter with only a few exceptions. I figure I'll have Honda fix it and still use the plastic piece I ordered to prevent recurrences. Honda says they install a bumper on the chrome to stop it from happening again but I figure the black will make my trunk match the grille anyway.

So instead of having the chrome one installed. You can ask them to place a black one instead?

I bought the black plastic one to try to avoid having the rust form in the first place. Too late! I found the rust when I pulled the chrome off to install the plastic.

So you have to pay for the black one right? They don't pay for it?
