Anyone with experience powder coating wheels, question for you
So I'm thinking about getting my wheels powder coated. In the end, you get what you pay for, I got my wheels super cheap and the paint around the lip is starting to chip off, even though I've never curbed them or anything.
When I get them powder coated, can I get the wheels done one color and the lip another? Or is it just one color across the whole wheel? Also, can you get a shiny surface or is it always that wrinkled/flat look I always see? |

The finish can be gloss, satin, flat, metallic, pearl, chameleon, etc etc. But depending on type of finish the price can go up quite a bit. Some finishes they'll need to powdercoat/bake twice, which drives up the cost. My wheels, for example, were powdercoated a graphite-ish black with an additional clearcoat, making it more glossy:
![]() If it's a 3-piece wheel it's easier to paint the lip one color and the wheels another--I'm pretty sure it's possible with 1-piece wheels too, as they'd mask that area when powdering the lip. As for wrinkle, that depends on the quality of the powdercoat shop. Cheaper places you'll notice more orange peeling, while nicer places the finish will look smooth. You can see it's pretty smooth from this pic:

"Pretty sure" is a bit different from "you weren't sure" haha.
Price greatly varies on the shop. Some places are as cheap as $20-40 per wheel for single coat. Of course, these places are usually leaning more towards industrial coating (truck racks or whatever), so imo it's not worth risking it if you have like a nice set of forged wheels to give them to a shop that doesn't have a lot of wheel powder coating experience. Very reputable shops are usually $100-150 per wheel. Use a custom color that's not in stock and it's another $50-60 to the total for the powder. Double that for two custom colors that's $100. Double coat I'd expect to pay over $600. In short, you'll just have to search around and ask different shops, because there's no real standard rate. |

Craftsman Powder Coat System - Model 17288 at Sears.com
You can get the Craftsman gun. I've used it before on smaller things. Buy the fancy powders online or ebay. You MUST strip ALL of the paint off first for powder to stick as it stays on electro-statically. |
