Max tire size on 16" wheel?

I have the stock 16" alloy wheels on my 2006 LX coupe. I would like to change the tires to something a little stickier for Auto-X. What is the widest I can go? Stock size is 205/55/16. I would like to try 215/50/16 or 215/45/16. Has anyone does this? Does the sidewall bulge out too much?

Thanks.

If there is less bulge there will be less rubber on the ground. Does anyone know the width of the 16" alloys?

Great, if that is the case I should have no problem fitting a 215 or even 225 width tire on there.
