16" Won't make it lower because your tire size should increase....

Like if you got 16", generally your tire size will grow to be about same sidewall height as your 215/45's...It might drop it tad more but yeah..

Before you go and lower it, what is the tire size you are going with?

Lowering the car thru spring/shock combos doesn't really lower your car that much. Should be ok...

Run with 205/45 gives you about .4cm difference, it probably won't show much change at all.

Thats right for 205/45r17 but for 16" rims he would have to go with 205/55r16, 205/50r16 or a 215/50r16... the latter being the closest in overall diameter to the stock 215/45r17.

Why can't he use 205/45?

He could use it... nothing saying he can't. But using a 205/45R16 would result in 1.3" less in overall diameter compared with stock 215/45R17... Even a 215/45R16 is an inch less. If that is what you are looking for though, by all means it is useable, although it will throw your speed off.

I am currently running 16 inch Rota GT-3's with a 205/45/R16 tire. I am dropped on TEIN SS coilovers and I have to say the ride is great. I really don't scrape that much. I drive the streets of Baltimore and the only time I have a problem is if I hit a big dip or pothole the front of the car (presumably the tow hooks) will bottom out and the car will hit. Other then that no problems with speed bumps or driveways. As long as you are careful / take things at a angle you will be fine.
