Powder Coating Wheels

Hey All,

I'm wondering what people's experience has been powder coating their wheels to change the color? Does it last? Are there any problems with chipping or anything like that?

I am considering the HFP's but I think they are a bit dark for a black car, so I am wondering about getting them painted in a matt silver.

BTW about how much does it cost to have a set of wheels powder coated?

Thanks,
CG

its actually really easy to powder coat them yourself, obv. youd have to buy the gun and all and have an oven...lol maybe its not so practical to do it yourself, but ive powder coated rims and its by no where means difficult. But if you dont have the stuff to do it then youd have to get it done by someone else, not sure how much it will cost though

if you prep the wheel right, painting the wheels with spray paint can come out just as good.

I have powdercoated wheels and its starting to chip, whereas my painted wheels are holding up strong.

my local powdercoater charges me 55 a wheel for standard colors (15")

17" should be less than 100 per wheel

powder coating is a great way to change the color of your wheels but if you want HFP's in silver, buy them in silver.

How well does it work? Does it last long or are their problems?

One of my friends bought some sort of special spray paint specifically designed for wheels from CT (Canadian Tire) and it looked decent for about 3 weeks and then it started coming off in spots and looked awful

If I opt for the powder coat solution I would want it to be a one time deal. Not something I have to redo on a regular basis.

Haven't been able to find them in 17" in silver.

Do you have a place to suggest?

there may be chipping down the road from normal wear and tear, it wont fall apart in 3 weeks though, i personally would radther do what prorcracer87 said and prep the wheel and spray paint it. probably last much longer

Oh yeah. These are powder coated. They are very durable and have been through one Ohio brutal winter and no problems at all.

Yeah I thought it was fairly easy to get HFP's in silver.

eBay Motors: HONDA CIVIC HFP WHEELS (item 180299284149 end time Oct-22-08 17:33:26 PDT)

Are these not the ones you're looking for?

Those appear to be the right color but in an 18"

I've been told that those will only work with civic's/csx's with TPMS. Not sure if that true?

Not sure how a wheel would only work with a car with TPMS. TPMS is just the electronic module used to monitor the tire pressure. If your car doesn't have it then it just doesn't use it.

17's in silver

eBay Motors: Genuine OEM 2006-2009 Honda Civic HFP 17? Alloy Wheel (item 200263077535 end time Nov-11-08 18:28:18 PST)

College Hills Honda has the new 08 HFP wheels. They are silver w/ sensors. I think around $240 for 17s and around $280 for 18s. Hope this helps.

Did you have to take off your tires and wheels weights to strip the wheel of anything before taking them in? I'm sure you have to do all of that first.

I'm planning on getting my Enkei's done in powder coating for a different color. I can't decide. I can't believe how cheap powder coating something is!
It's stronger than paint and last MUCH longer than paint yet it's cheaper?....?

Thats crazy!

My wheels are perfect now but i'm thinking of painting them a different color.

I made a thread about powder coating wheels cause I didn't see anything else on the 8th about it. That was my fault, I didn't use search too good.

What ARE the pro's and con's about powder coating? I can't believe there would be ANY con's about it AT ALL!

I dont think theyre really is cons into powdercoating. Im sure over time they will chip and so forth just like normal factory painted wheels will. It really isnt that much. I got some estimates on my GPs that will be powdercoated.
They priced me at 55$ a rim for any color. And 85$ a rim If you want it polished. They also said they use just one coat but for a little extra they would put another coat on. Hopefully this gives some idea and thats for 18inch..

From what I have seen most seem very happy with their powdercoated rims.

I had mine powdercoated for $70 a wheel and it has been holding well for 2 months now.

I got a question though...do factory rims come powdercoated?

^NICE! I needed to know cause I'm planning on changing the color of my Enkei GTC-01's and powder coating them a different color. IMO, powder coating seems WAY cheaper than I was anticipating it to be. I will get the best of the best job then. I just have to call places, maybe visit them to check them out and get a good or bad vibe from them to see who I want to do my wheels. I didn't think there were any con's really to PC. It's the strongest paint to paint ANYTHING with! Whats "polished" about? you mean polish the wheel after sand blasting it and stripping the paint off? I wonder what that would look like. Might be nice! I have 17x7 size wheels so I guess the smaller the wheel the cheaper?...? We'll see. I thank you for the info though cause I was thinking of selling me Enkei's but these wheels are nasty cool and are hard to find or come by and not many people have them. They're nice and light and are made in JAPAN like GOOD wheels should be. I think i'll just keep them. Nothing really wrong with them, I just want a different color. I think I might have a color. I haven't really picked it out though. I'm thinking gold with the ingraved lettering being red. IF they can handle that, it would be REALLY nice! Or just flat black all the way around the wheel. I haven't really made up my mind.

^This is nice to see also cause feedback is good. I ALSO wanted to know if GOOD factory wheels are powder coated.

I was quoted about $20 extra to get it powdercoated to silver for 17" RSX rims. He said silver color has flakes in it so it needs to have another clear coat layer on top of it for durability. Since i was going to pay for it already I asked him about PC to white and it was $20 cheaper and I have always wanted white rims, so i am happy :-)
