Need help choosing tires

Hi,
I own a black civic (sedan). I'm thinking about changing my stock tires to some nice 18 inch tires. The thing is though,I'm not really familar with anything about tires so my question is what type tires are good and what are some good brands that you'd recommend to get?

First of all tires are rubber, and wheels are metal. If you want 18" 'tires' Im assuming you mean wheels and tires?

Wheels there are any number of good brands out there, depending on what you want to do with the car. Being as its a sedan, I know its not a Si, and as its not a Si, Im assuming your going more for looks than performance.

That said, things to look for are 1) design you like, and 2) how they're constructed, and 3) price. Design is obviously the most important, and probably price next for most daily drivers your wanting to stay within a certian budget. Construction can be important if your roads are particulary rough, or if your planing on offroading at all, but generaly any good name brand wheel isn't going to colapse going to the corner store.

Wheel construction techniques Basicaly you want a wheel strong enough to live up to the stresses you hand out to it. If your using a gravity cast aluminum wheel, its going to have to be considerably beefier than a forged wheel to hold up to the same potholes.

Wheel + Tire Ride Compairison Here they look at a test car (BMW M3) with several wheel and tire setups, to look at pros and cons of each (OEM, bigger lightweight, and bigger heavy setups) you can gather some useful information from this, but cliffs notes is that light weight handles better heavy rides beter.\

Edit: If your buying wheels and tires for the first time, I would suggest using a wizzard, such as found at Discount Tire or Tire Rack to help insure that you get wheels that fit, and if you have an extra 10 min, call them and talk to a salesperson rather than order off the internet. My experience is that the people working there generaly do know what they're talking about.
