Are any of the above cities close by to ASU? Is one better than the other? What's the cost of apartments there?

i live in mesa arizona which is a ok depending were u live at , I live in a nice area gilbert rd and the 60 freeway but mesa also has some not so good looking areas ... if I were just gonna go to school there i would probally live in tempe it self as the west side is to far (avondale, glendale, peoria) and the east side the almost the same thing but slightly closer , tempe is a nice clean area for the most part rent will run around 800 a month for a 2 bedroom, u could find cheaper than that though..

I live about 2 miles down the road from ASU. I have lived in Az for 20 years. I live in South Scottsdale a few blocks north of Tempe. Where you want to live depends on where in ASU you will be attending classes because there is a ASU EAST/ASU WEST/ASU MAIN ect... remember ASU has like 74000 students this year. ASU MAIN is in downtown tempe right by the Sun Devil stadium. Now if you don't have to worry about money... Scottsdale and or Tempe is a good bet for you. Although mind you Scottsdale is hella expensive and Tempe is starting to get up there also. Mesa is next door to Tempe to the east. Then Gilbert which is surrounded by Mesa. West Phoenix is probably 5 miles west of ASU MAIN. Tempe is a fairly small city in the middle of all the other cities. The Valley of the Sun has grown so much that all of the cities touch eachother. If you want walking distance to ASU MAIN... get a dorm in tempe, but all the parking around there sucks. South Scottsdale is a short drive. You could probably get an apartment or a house in west mesa that is within 5 to 8 miles also.

Yea... Peoria/Avondale you would be driving 35 miles one way to get to school.

I stayed in Scottsdale at a friends house last year. It was hella nice, but I hear the cost of living in Scottsdale is also hella expensive. He told me Scottsdale is the premier city. I believe my campus is located in Tempe. So, from what I gather from all the feedback, living close by to ASU, isn't so bad. It's just the parking sucks. If I live within a 5-10 mile radius from the campus, I should be fine. Parking situation won't be a nightmare.

Peoria/Avondale is 35 miles one way... no way! Gas prices suck! I'll stay away from these cities. Thank for the heads up!

Yea, Gas sucks right now, buying a house aint so bad unless you are trying to buy one in scottsdale because of the market although it hasn't changed anything in scottsdale. Rent in scottsdale is probably 900+. Also they are currently constructing a new campus for ASU in south scottsdale right down the street from my place. I don't know when it will be open tho. It is very nice. Its on the corner of Scottsdale Rd and McDowell Rd. If you happen to swing by there and check it out when you move down here. Also if and when you do move down here. Ya better be comin to the meets!!!!

So I take it, that the housing market is still good down in Scottsdale, or at least leveled off a bit. I saw some drawings of the new student housing they are developing, but no real pictures yet. I hear the student housing will be done by this year end. There is already a wait list for this!
I'm sure once I settle in, I'll make time for a meet or two.

Well I mean you can get a house easily around the valley except for scottsdale where the prices are still like... 350,000 for a 3 bedroom 2 bath 1800 square feet. Where in east mesa you can get that for 170. Same thing for the west if you don't mind commuting. Assuming you wanted to stay. As far as apartments go... I have never been in one and probably never will be in one... Having a Carport/Garage and a backyard and being able to party as hard as you want pretty much beats it all.

i lived in PHX for about 6 years, and breaks down like this - Peoria/Glendale = wack. Mesa = Mormon/cop heavy. Tempe = rad, thriving college town (is Cheba Hut still there?) . Phoenix proper = nothing going on when the lights go out. Ahwatukee = nice, mellow. Oh, and if you skate, you'll be stoked. Parks in every city!

and how could i forget? Scottsdale = pretentious bastards and eye candy galore!
