Martial Arts

Hey everyone I just signed up for Karate, I use to take it back when I was like 5 and kung fu for a bit when I was about 12 and I decided to start up again to hopefully get me in shape and learn how to not get beat up...Anybody else in 8th take martial arts?

yes, I do. But please don't say "Karate" again because its Martial Arts. Its like calling a black man the "N" word to a martial artist... Just so you know when you go to your first lesson and dont get roundhouse kicked by Chuck Norris LOL .

Anyways I've been doing martial arts since 98. I have 2 black belts both of which I'm still current in :) . Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the 2nd one in T'ai Chi. Look em up. If your quite flexible like I am then maybe its something you could get into :)

hmm my old Dojo had in large letters Karate on it. Primarly a TKD school but had Judo and Aikido.

"learn how to not get beat up." avoid the fight to begin with! IMO most martial arts limit a person to playing by the rules. Street fighting is different. No points and no rules.

Enjoy it and have fun -

i do some taekwondo mostly to learn cool kicks and for the sport of it. i also did shaolin kung fu for the same reason... also tried some capoeira. i really just do it to learn interesting technique and for exercise. i would like to do demonstrations/forms one day... oh also did some boxing. that one was fun; great workout.

ohhhhhhh that one is awesome

PS: technically you can call a lot of martial arts "karate" because all karate means is "empty hand." so any discipline that doesn't use weapons other than the body may be called karate... its a debatable term.

The jujitsu is the better MA to learn about how to survive a street fight or win a MMA event. But it is tough on the body. If you can handle it - do this one. Invest in ice packs and knee wraps. I used to soak in hot bath before class and then ice packs on the way home from Judo class.

TKD is more of an art. Pretty kicks and neat little forms to do. But IMO it just trains you to be only good at sparring and not real fighting. Even worse yet is that some of the TKD are just blackbelt schools - money for belts.

I have a 4th dan black belt in TKD and couldn't disagree with the previous poster more... TKD teaches you reflex, technique, and self control. In TKD, we train in defense and kicking because kicks will deliver the most powerful blows. The leg is the strongest muscle in your body and the reason most people don't kick in a fight is because they don't know how to kick properly.

However, I will agree that there are a lot of McTKD's where they sell blackbelts, but there is no honor in that!

why cant you call it Karate?? Isnt that a specific form of martial arts while martial arts is a system of fighting and tradition?? Thats like calling every dog a dog regardless if its a bulldog, golden retriever, or a St. Bernard.

he meant when people generalize all martial arts and call it karate... there are new people at our academy that will call tkd karate and it is just flat out disrespectful and rude... we take pride in our academy, we hate it when people generalize. mostly just ignorant people anyway thou.

I have done brazilian Ju Jujitsu, and a mix of muy thai and boxing for about 5 years on and off. I love it, you build alot of power, and learn alot about control. I have fought guys that are alot bigger than me and won. I miss doing it, it has been about 6 months since I have been training, thats what I mean by on and off lol. Although I would say the first 2 1/2 years were consistant 1 to 2 times a week. And for about 6 months I trained 5 days a week for about 3 to 8 hours.
