That sounds great. Near any of the resorts I mentioned?

Any other 'must see' places too. I'll be there for a few weeks I choose a Sandals St. Lucia resort.

nah ... all the sandals resorts u mentioned are in the north end of the island ...
the volcano is in the south ...
it will probably take u about 1 hr. drive to the volcano from any of the resorts u mentioned give or take a lil ...

u have the rain forest, frigate island, maria island, rat island(not cuz there's a lot of rats there), diamond falls, botanical gardens, sulphur springs (part of the volcano), mineral baths, if you are at the grande u'll be near fort rodney and another fort (look out points during war, there's jail cells and other stuff there), u'll also be right near a museum and the national park ...

a bunch of other waterfalls,
the twin peaks (gros piton + petit piton)

and i'm leaving some stuff out...

nope ...
that's regular so the damage is minimal ...
i spoke to my parents this morning, the majority of the island still had electricity, phone service, water etc etc ... back to work for those who work today, tomorrow etc.

that's very different than when a hurricane hits the US.

the death tole should rise ... sadly ...
but there are a lot of people who have house built on the sea and near the sea ... especially in fishing villages ... they are usually elderly people ... and they don't leave unless u force them to.

there are evacuation procedures but even then some people don't evacuate and escape the long hands of the law.

that sought of stuff always happens ...
but the sun comes out and a new set rebuilds in those same areas and it happens all over again ... houses just get swept into the sea ...

the last major hurricane, hurricane Allen was in 1980 (direct hit) BUT every year since then we get brushed by some sough of storm/hurricane... this was a brush as well ... had it been a direct hit, it would have been worst.

but the majority of the houses are built to withstand hurricanes ... the building codes are stricter than Florida's codes ... though no one follows them at home ...they just build the British way ( cavity exterior walls with 8"-12" concrete blocks, 6"-8" interior walls of concrete blocks, foundations that go at least 6' deep) .. so no drywall or wooden frames etc ...

PS: my high school is over 100 years old (old war barracks) and has seen it's share of punishment ... it's still a school today and has undergone little repair ... last major issue was a freak centipede attack

Is there any racism on the St. Lucia? Like do they dislike whites for example because they occupied the islands?

How is the crime rate? How is the economy? Is this 1st world?

there is no racism ... everyone is too happy go lucky to even think about stuff like that ...
there is rich and poor and middle class like everywhere else ... the only difference there is you couldn't tell if u went to a party or something cuz there's hardly any separation/segregation when everyone is out having a good time ... everyone just bands together ...
reason being some of the rich were once poor etc etc ... so you just get everyone being like one big family.
i'd be considered rich, but u'd find me in the ghetto sometimes, i have not so well off friends, etc etc ... no one looks at me different and i don't look at anyone else differently.

whites never really occupied the island ...
regardless they are still a lot of whites on the island ... reason why there's white on our flag to represent them ... they just fit right in ...

crime is like anywhere else ... hit or miss .. the majority of crime is drug/gang related ...
petty theft occurs now and then
u'll have a murder now and then ... usually drug or gang related ...
random crime is seldom ...
every time a crime is solved there's some kind of connection between the involved parties ...

the economy is great ... used to be ran by banana exports but that has taken a back seat to tourism ...
think about this ... 2.7169 EC dollars (eastern caribbean dollar, st. lucian money) = 1 US dollar ... compare that to the other currencies of the world ...
jamaica = ~ $60 - 1 US
china = ??
etc etc

1st world ??? no
3rd world ??? i would say no ...
but the US and others like to refer to anyone beneath them as 3rd world ...
no one likes to hear that especially when they know they are a lot more developed than the US and others give them credit for ... IMO it all comes from not being educated and so they just refer to you as 3rd world or whatever ... IMO it's a slap in the face ... doesn't really bother me, however, believe me when i tell you that A LOT of people/developed countries take it seriously and see it as the other countries not giving them credit in an effort to keep them down ... it creates hatred... not so much in the Caribbean countries but there is still an underlying disgust over it there...
though some can be classified as 3rd world according to the guide lines set for such ...
