Need some Formal Clothing advice
Well, I never really bought myself a nice suit/jacket before; I would always rent or just wear a shirt and dress pants with a tie.
but now, my job is having a neurosurgery conference and it is recommended to wear a jacket, it's a 4 day event and I thought this will be a perfect chance for me to buy one for the first time. I am a skinny guy and I would like to have like those fitted suits, can someone direct me to a good website or place in Socal? |

any decent place that sells suits should measure you and tailor it to your body. since you describe youself as skinny, i would try an athletic cut. if you buy from some type of discount seller/wholeseller, you will have to find a tailor. im not in Socal so cant help you on a place.

Your going to wear the same jacket for 4 days in a row? I guess im just funny about this stuff. For your first suit i would recommend doing what they said, go to jcpenny or a store like that.. you can get decent stuff and they will almost definantly find a place to tailor it to you.
Im a skinny guy (around a 26ish inch waist) and i have all of my suits custom made because i do not like the way the store bought looks on me.. even after they tailor it to my body.. lol i guess im just picky but rather spend a little more and have something made 100% for me.. i go in pick out the fabric and sometimes i bring in a picture and have it made, i also have my shirts custom made. In short the answer you are looking for varys widely on what your budget is. |

A couple of tips on your suit buying. First of all, don't get a black suit. In the business world, a black suit is inappropriate. A solid navy or charcoal is a better choice and is more versatile. Black suits are for weddings and funerals.
Secondly, if you are new to buying suits, put on what you think will fit, and then size down. A lot of people who aren't familiar with buying suits will go with a size (or more) too big. The most important place that a suit should fit are your shoulders. To see if it fits, put the jacket on and move up against a wall, shoulder first. If your shoulder pad in the jacket touches the wall first, it is too big. If your arm touches the wall before the shoulder, you are good. Oh, and as for length, the skirt (length) of the jacket should just cover your butt. It shouldn't go longer, and it shouldn't be shorter. Thirdly, if the jacket fits in your shoulders, and covers your butt, don't worry about the rest in the store. You can have the sleeves shortened and can have the waist brought in so that it is slimmer after you have purchased the suit. A good tailor can work wonders. How much are you willing to spend? If you want something that lasts, I would recommend going to a reputable place. My first choice would be Brooks Brothers (I used to work for them during college) and I am sure there is a store in SoCal for you. They may even have some of the Thom Browne "Black Fleece" collection in which is very slim...but expensive. Even if you don't plan on buying, the salesmen can help you out greatly in finding your size and helping you make a decision. Oh, and a couple more things, don't button the bottom button of the jacket and check out www.styleforum.net for some more help. |

I wear a suit everyday for work and I recommend getting the best suit you can afford. My Hugo Boss and Armani suits still look freshly pressed after several days of wear. For a 4 day conference you could probably work with two suits and 4 shirt and tie combinations.
Get good shoes, nothing worse than a nice suit and cheap shoes. No matter what suit you get, make sure you have it tailored to fit you. You can make a bad suit look qood or make a good suit look great if it is tailored correctly. |

You should get two suits. ask for a spring suit which is a lighter material and then get a reg suit. Yes Black is fine. unless thousands of people in NYC are wrong. I have a few black suits, grey and navy and a khaki "spring suit".
french cuff shirts are nice with a suit and a good shirt and tie combo always helps. Dont get a solid shirt with a matching solid tie, that is horrible. try breaking it up. example- a blue shirt with a orange tie and a navy or black suit. a nice tie makes for a good impression, and depending on how much you feel like spending... a nice watch completes the outfit. no need for tie clips or pins also, stipes are good year round, and "box prints" are more spring/summer style this is all my opinion though, just telling you what most wear in Manhattan shoes are also key. A good style that is "in" are dress shoes with some kind of metal on them. like Gucci's, but you can spend $100 on some nice Kenneth coles instead of $500 + |

Honestly if your just a "once in a blue moon" type of suit guy. Go to JCPenney, and use a coupon usually found in your sunday paper. They actually have surprisingly NICE suits AND its one of the ONLY areas of the store that is on Commission SO they will actually tell you and point you in the right direction in terms of quality and will size you on the spot. as for the REST OF JCP.... if your 80yrs old... its your disney land. |

it saves me from having to wear sneakers on my commute and switching to dress shoes in the office AND walking around the city it saves my ankels and knees. WELL worth the money and if you hunt around, slickdeals & fatwallet usually have some discount codes for online sites. |
