The Military

So I'm supposed to be a 6th semester junior at Uconn in the fall. But I don't feel like I'm getting everything I want out of life. Recruiter for the Air Force told me because I have the credits for an associates degree they'd take me as an officer.

I don't want to be seperated from my fiance for a long long time, but I want to try something new and get away. I just wish I could take her with me.

Any thoughts? Comments? Rough day of thinking for me so maybe posting will help me out a bit.

Thanks guys/girls

My dad is enlisted in the navy(E7 Chief), and honestly the military has taken care of us, it is an honorable career. My dad always talks about officers and how it is way better than being enlisted. The only downside is the amount of time you may have to leave your family

No disrespect to those in the military, but I wouldn't join them. I like staying here. I wouldn't wanna be out of the country for months at a time. But you did say you might like the get-away so if you're willing to accept whatever comes your way, go ahead and do it. Once you join, there is no turning back.

I love the idea of everything but leaving my fiance, and her and I would be OK for a couple months but we want to be married soon and stuff. These recruiters tell you blah blah blah "you'll see her in 6 weeks" blah blah blah "she can be on base with you right after basic."

But I know a salesman when I've seen one and thats what he's doing, selling.

I don't want to be stuck and seperated from her. This is frigggggen killing me. I need to drink. lol

Go listen to Rhymefest w/ Citizen Cope - Bullet

[Rhymefest]
Straight outta highschool he didn't know what to do
Wanted to go to college but no money was nothin' new
Wanted to get away go see the world and do somethin' new
He got approached in the mall by the army recruit
Told him "If you wanna go to school we got money too,
Sign up at eighteen you be you when you twenty-two"
He joined the army airborne got his uniform went to bootcamp got some
discipline Iraq is where they shipped him
He's in the mission where bullets flyin' and missin him
Wishin' he was a kid again with his family in Michigan
In the midst of fightin' militiamen, one round took down six of them
He ain't really a killa though, takin' a lotta risks
This is what a poor person do for a scholarship
He turned around and got a face full of hollow-tips
But don't be mad, he died for the flag

[Chorus: Citizen Cope]
Now what you've done here, is put yourself between a bullet and a target
And it won't be long before, you're pullin' yourself away
What you've done here, is put yourself between a bullet and a target
And it won't be long before, you're pullin' yourself away

[Rhymefest]
Papa was a playa, knew just what to say ta'
Get the women back to his lair, and lay her
If sex had a trophy he's the Hiesman touchdown
Hittin' models and B-chicks in Buzztown
He got the women with crazy stares with his lady there
Thay ain't care they like "Ooh look at his baby hair"
He took 'em all put 'em in a line hit five new chickens
He though they was fine
Got head from five dopefiends smokin' a dime
And did it all raw dog, and dog I ain't lyin'
Til' he woke up one season with legions
He went to the doctor asked him what was the reason
The test read positive he couldn't believe it
He tried to blame God askin' why did he leave him
Pleadin' please let the disease leave him
From women that he conquered, he caught the monster

[Chorus]

[Rhymefest]
Now when the sun goes down, north side of town
On the other side of the block, when cops ain't around
On the same side of the street that 'Pac hit the ground
Not in Vegas, cause every ***** got 'Pac in him now
When my guys hit the block, and we provin' we thugs
I ain't on no swim team but you see pools of blood
Skip Judy when you die, she ain't whose the judge
If you married to game then prove your love
Here's a strap shorty, shoot it do it then do it
This ain't a game this a organized movement
My hurt, my love, my pain, my stress
My strife, my wife, my life, my test
We made for more, we die for less
When you starvin' in the ghetto I'ma right the rest
See my girl think I'm hard, and my Momma think I'm hard
But when I'm all up in the dark I just fall on my knees

[Chorus]

and never think about doing that shit again :)

Kudos to (most) of those who serve, but I refuse to join any form of the armed forces until the lift on the ban of gays and lesbians serving in the military is dropped, and a formal apology is publically aired on every channel by General (ex) Pace and the United States government for that bill ever being law, as well as the Pentagon's classification of homosexuality under disorders such as bed wetting up until 2006 when it was removed.

If your gonna join, go air force. Just keep in mind that I worked next to Air Force officers in Iraq. When you get out and you have officer time in you are gonna get mad job offers, 6 figures. Plus officers don't do anything anyway. Pencil pushers that sign my leave form and act like pussies all the time. Crying about how their desk chair is crooked. Sounds pretty sweet though.

I'll add some female input here. I'm not too sure what to say as I don't really know any military people. But I think the fact that this has you so confused and unsure, and you seem concerned about your fiancee that maybe it's not the greatest idea.
The fact that it would provide a "get away" seems like a silly reason to justify doing it, as there are many other ways to "get away", including with your fiancee.

Just make sure you think about it, and don't jump to any decisions too quickly. GL

You better double check....I never heard such a thing. All college with a 4 year degree are a candidate being selected to be a officer. That after he/she attended OCS and pass.

Yet, they might be deperate for new recruit. This is the worses time to enlist.

Maybe he talking about a warrant officer. They in a separate class. They rank below 2nd Lt.

Just one more thing you and I agree on, hey Steph.

Partly correct. You NEED a bachelors degree to join as an officer. If you do enlist, there are some opportunities (depending on branch of service) to move into the officer ranks if you don't have a BA/BS.

Also, Air Force did away with CWO ranks in the 60s.

KB1IOQ,
You could always join after you get married. That way, she'll get to go with you (and you'll get some extra cash )

If you haven't served don't bash us. First let me say I'm an Army SGT, have been in since August 2001 (trust me, I don't know if Id have joined if I waited another month) Just like there are old dinosars right now in the political world that still wanna hold on to old values, it's our responsibility as the Next Generation to change the values that will lead the world when they're gone. So saying "I refuse to join any form of the armed forces until lift on the ban of gays and lesbians serving in the military is dropped" says to me "I'm not going to do anything about a law, except bitch about it."

Instead of letting laws we don't agree with keep getting passed, reach down, grab some intestinal fortitude (aka balls) and make a change. Remember, you'll have children, and you want them to live in a better world than we do so let's try to do that.

And I know a lot of "***/lesbian" soldiers, sailors, and airmen in the military and it's not like that law is brought up in their face daily. Until you made that statement, and I researched it, I didn't know it existed and I've been in for 6 years

Remember, "If you can't stand behind our soldiers, Stand in front of them!"

As a military member with some college I say, finish what you started first. Get your degree out of the way then become an officer. THat'll give you time for your fiance. When you join the military, your butt is thiers for the extent of your contract. Unless you screw up royalty, get injured to the point that you cant do your job or are psycho you aren't going anywhere for 4+ years. If you don't like your job, fellow officers, subordinates you can't leave. You're stuck.

It's not awful but it's not always the answer. This is a big thing specially since you're about to put the last 3 years of your life that you've worked so hard on , on hold for an unsure thing. Think about it long and hard.

Specialringpop did not bash the military. As a matter of fact, he said "kudos to those who've served..." He made a political statement based upon his opinion and position as he is entitled to. His comment is no different than the ones I hear all the time "thank you for serving. I may not agree with the war but that doesn't mean that I don't support you.''

SpecialRingpop has very strong convictions about the rights and treatment of homosexuals. He would not be able to voice his opinion about it in the military. Because of his position, he is better off not being in the military so that he can devote more to it. I see nothing the matter with that. Some choose to serve for different reasons. Why is it so wrong that some choose not too?

Military is a great career, many people do not have good opportunities in life but the military can bring new lives to people. Right now my father just recently retired, My college is paid for(Just tuition has to be a CA public university), plus our medical was all taken care of. Its cool shopping in places with no taxes(Exchange+commissary). But what the military will bring anyone is respect no matter what you do you will gain respect. We still celebrate our veterans from the past. Im still debating if I want to be an officer or not, but the military is a great career choice. I guess you have to be somewhat connected to the military to understand how great a career it is.

The military isn't for everyone but it's tragic that some people that may enjoy a career in the military will never know what it's all about because of the horror stories or common misconceptions. It's a relatively laid back lifestyle. A lot of things are taken care of for you. If you can get past the waking up early and doing pt everyday, both of which are actually good for you, then it's really not so bad. The ex soldiers that have nothing but negative things to say probably weren't that great of soldiers in the first place or they let something bad that happened to them dwell in their minds. Really in any job bad things are gonna happen. I found being an office supervisor for a logistics company ten times more stressful and annoying than being deployed. And I went to the triangle of death. It's all about being mentally tough. if your not mentally tough then no you shouldn't get into the military. Except maybe the Navy, they aren't really doing anything. HAHAHA just a joke hondagrl. But really all careers are that way. Not everyone can be a doctor because they can't stand the sight of trauma. Not everyone can be a lawyer because they aren't good liars. And not everyone can be a fast food worker because they can't deal with customers that think they are king of the moment when they stand in front of them.

Basically, people watch too much tv. And Ft Gordon guy, please chill, it's not like you are in the most hardcore unit there.
